What to Do with Polls?

  • Unknown's avatar

    I have the WP native site on WP’s own servers. As part of that, there are several things pre-installed, including polls.

    My question is this. How do polls work?

    I’ve read/listened to anything I could get my hands on from WP’s help system, but I can’t seem to find anything.

    Yesterday I tried to create a test page and put a poll on it. It seems kludgey. There doesn’t appear to be any way to increase the width of the poll to fit even the half of a post, and there’s apparently no way to center it or right-justify it and then put text around it, as you can with an image.

    Further, it says it’s from Polldaddy, and when I choose polls under settings, it says that I need to import (or already have imported) my account. But I don’t have a Polldaddy account that I know of.

    One other question. If you put the poll in the sidebar, you can’t “turn it on” only on certain pages, is that right? Or in other words, you can’t make it appear in the sidebar only on certain pages.

    I’m using WP’s Quintus theme.

    Thanks in advance for any help or direction you might be able to give…

    1) Polls have three ready-made sizes, but you can make them any size you like if you create a custom style.

    2) You can center a poll or make text wrap around it via extra coding in the HTML editor. I can show you when you decide which one of the two you would prefer.

    3) Sidebar items don’t change from page to page. You can deactivate the whole sidebar but not the poll alone.

    Thanks for this. I’m afraid I didn’t catch it before now.

    This is exactly what I needed. I would very much like to get that code from you. I’m fairly capable in simple HTML–I’ve done my share. I would prefer, however, for the poll to be either right- or left-justifed, with text around it. I’m not thinking I’ll need it centered.

    Is that doable?

    For a left-aligned poll, with text wrap:

    <div style="float:left;margin-right:14px;">
    POLL SHORTCODE HERE
    </div>
    TEXT HERE
    <br style="clear:both;" />

    You can change the margin number to adjust the space between poll and text.
    For a right-aligned poll with text wrap, you will of course use float:right and margin-left.

    Sweet. That’s so helpful. Thanks a ton…
