What to do with the theme after I download it?

I feel like I am missing a huge element in the whole WP subject. I have an account with WP.com. I found a free theme on Woo themes. I’ve downloaded it. What do I need to do to be able to put my blog, which is now in one of the free themes that come with WP.com account?
Why did I see somewhere on WP that I can’t add themes and I need to download something from WP.org? I don’t want to deal with the server, I like the idea of WP. Do I need to upgrade my account to be able to use themes by developers other than themes from WordPress.com?
I am trying to find a theme that is good for video and multimedia and that one on woo is something tha I really liked.
What am I missing?
