What to do with wordpress.COM site before/after moving to wordpress.ORG?
-
Originally purchased alongourway.com from wordpress.COM. I’ve had it for a couple months. Prior to that it was alongourway.wordpress.com since January 2013.
I decided I wanted more freedom with the blog so I got bluehost, installed wordpress, and imported my XML file from my wordpress.COM site.
on WordPress.COM the only thing I did was change the name servers to point to Bluehost. On WordPress.COM, alongourway.com is still the considered primary domain.
Should the primary be switched to alongourway.wordpress.com?Is there anything else that needs to be done on the wordpress.COM side to make things work smoothly?, or anything that should have been done before exporting/importing the XML file?
The reason I ask is because I’m having problems with the images on some of my posts now.
– I have broken images on certain posts, but in the Edit Post view, you can see the images load slowly. Also, when you click the broken image it brings you to a full size page of the image. Because of this, I know the photos are existing somewhere, right? Here’s an example of the broken image issue..check out this post (http://www.alongourway.com/2014/03/19/ascending-mt-hood-to-yocum-ridge/) and click on the first broken image. The image URL is really weird, and this is how I think most of the broken URL’s look with “i0.wp.com/www.alongourway.com” at the beginning. You are able to see the image when you click the broken icon…::scratches head::
Could anyone help? Did I do anything wrong on the wordpress.COM side before exporting my file?
Just wondering what I’m doing wrong. I can’t seem to find anything online and none of the step by step guides cater to someone who already had a same domain name on wordpress.COM
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
Please see my answers below!

Not necessarily – with your current setup, the only thing to keep in mind is that your WordPress.com blog (alongourway.wordpress.com) will redirect to your self-hosted site. That’s typically desired as you want blog visitors to find your most-updated site, which is typically your self-hosted site.
Is there anything else that needs to be done on the wordpress.COM side to make things work smoothly?, or anything that should have been done before exporting/importing the XML file?
Not really! It sounds like you did everything correctly.
I have broken images on certain posts, but in the Edit Post view, you can see the images load slowly. Also, when you click the broken image it brings you to a full size page of the image. Because of this, I know the photos are existing somewhere, right?
Were you able to fix this? It looks like your posts are all loading correctly on the blog post you mention:
http://alongourway.com/2014/03/19/ascending-mt-hood-to-yocum-ridge/
When I click the images, I’m directed to a URL like this:
http://alongourway.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/img_2712.jpg?297fd2
That’s the correct file path it looks like (to your self-hosted install). It doesn’t sound like you did anything wrong. Can you tell me if you’re still experiencing trouble with certain images?
Love the site by the way. I checked out your Bucket List. Alaska is absolutely gorgeous. You have to go! :)

Hi Jeremy,
Thanks for your response! Glad you like my blog, although I will say it’s still in need of a lot of work since I moved it over to bluehost!I was able to resolve the image issue. I resolved it by diabling all plugins, which at the time was really only the Jetpack. I’ve reinstall the Jetpack, but disabled Photon, which I think was the cause.

Hey Jenn,
Great! I’m glad you were able to figure this out. Photon shouldn’t interfere with how your images are delivered. It should really just make your images load quicker. If you enable it again, do the images stop appearing?
