What version of WordPress do I need?

  • Unknown's avatar

New to wordpress, used to code my websites by hand, now looking for an easier way to do this. Creating a web site for work (simple) and I would like to do the following: log in pages for our 2 different locations, a message board, a file transfer area (docs), a ‘for Sale’ area and possibly a photo gallery. I DO NOT want the WordPress ads so willing to go with the personal plan for $4/month but my budget is very thin and cannot go higher. Is WordPress for me or do I need to go back to hand coding??

The site I need help with is [visible only to staff] (email visible only to moderators and staff). It is not hosted by WordPress.com or connected with Jetpack. This site is not linked to my WordPress.com account.

  • Hi there,

    Hi there,

Can you expand a bit on log in pages for your different locations? Do you mean you want a way for members to log into their own accounts on the site?

If so, that would require the use of a membership plugin, which will require our Business Plan:

    https://wordpress.com/support/using-membership-plugins/

A message board where visitors/members can create their own posts will also require the use of a plugin, as would a “for sale” area, if you’re thinking in terms of member-submitted classified ads.

Login would be location-based and I have 2 locations. Simple login of 4 or 5 digits and then each location would have their own “web pages” which would all be the same but tailored to each location.
Message board and For Sale – would that require the Business plan?? Like I stated, my budget is very thin but I could afford the Personal plan but not the Business plan.
    Thank you for your reply.

  • For what you describe you’d need at the very least a membership plugin, possibly a geolocation plugin, and a message board or classifieds plugin. For advice on which specific plugins to use, you can ask the WordPress.org community at https://wordpress.org/support/forums/ – those are the people who make the open source WordPress software and plugins for that software, and have the experience needed for that type of advice.

Using plugins on WordPress.com is only possible on our Business or eCommerce plan. If that’s way over your budget, you’ll need to look at a traditional hosting provider instead, where you’ll then use the open source version of WordPress. I did a Google search for “WordPress hosting under $50 a year”, and found this page with some options you can consider:

I already own my own domain and hosting. That part is taken care of but I am new to this whole “plug and play” on coding of websites.
So if I have my own hosting and purchase a Personal plan, should I be able to do what I am looking for? If so, I will look thru these forums and see what I can put together.
Does the open source version of WordPress contain ads? I can pay the personal version to get rid of these.
I can hard code all I want to do, but really don’t want to do all that work unless no other choice.
Thank you for all your help.
    Michael

  • Since you already have your own hosting you are going to need to turn to the WordPress community support here to pose and get answers to your questions: https://wordpress.org/support/forums/

The forums here are primarily for sites hosted at WordPress.com, or folks looking to have WordPress.com host their site. In this case you already have hosting elsewhere.

    What to do next:

    1. You will need to now look at installing the free open source WordPress software if you have not already: https://wordpress.org/support/article/how-to-install-wordpress/

    2. Learn about plugins for WordPress: https://wordpress.org/support/article/plugins/

Plugins are features that are pre-built and designed to extend a WordPress environment in very specific ways. Plugins can save a lot of time depending on what you want your WordPress site to accomplish. It’s likely you don’t need to create any plugins. You can look for and install plugins that have already been created here: https://wordpress.org/plugins/

    3. Use the WordPress community support forums to ask questions and get answers (as well as help others as you become more familiar with WordPress): https://wordpress.org/support/forums/
