What version of WordPress.com do I have?

  • Unknown's avatar

My friend has a different Dashboard than I do. She installed WordPress before I did. Her Dashboard tells her she has the latest version, but she doesn’t have the features I do. How can we tell what version she has?
    Can it be updated?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Visit: http://ismyblogworking.com/ – put in the address of the blog in question

Version numbers at WordPress.COM don’t really count since we run a version slightly ahead of the WordPress.ORG stable release

Note there are two types of “WordPress”

Is it possible that your friend’s blog is at WordPress.ORG, which is on an entirely different platform than your WordPress.COM site. If it is at .ORG then she needs to check with the Powers That Be over there. With a .COM site, you will always have the most current update since it is done automatically.

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

Sorry for the duplicate info @auxclass, was slightly behind you on the uptake.

    Thanks for the quick answers!
My friend has a WordPress.com site. We’ve tried updating her site from her WordPress dashboard. The software will download as folders with no apparent way to install it.
I wonder if it might have to do with the fact that we both use Macs. (I really don’t think that’s it, because I’ve logged onto her site on my Mac and it has the same Dashboard she gets on her Mac.
    Any thoughts on that?

    Here’s some good news.
As two people have tried to inform you above there is NO way any blogger can upgrade a WordPress.COM version nor do they have to. Staff does all WordPress.COM upgrades – we bloggers do nothing!

  • Unknown's avatar

If that’s the case, do you have any other ideas on why the template works differently on her computer than on mine?
She installed WordPress before I did; we both use Macs; I changed my theme to the one she’s using and my Dashboard had a lot more features than the one she has with the exact same theme.
Very frustrating, to say the least.

She installed WordPress before I did

We do not install here at WordPress.COM. It’s only WordPress.ORG software that can be installed.

WordPress.com and WordPress.org are completely separate, have different log-ins and run different versions of themes with same names. http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

We provide support only for free hosted WordPress.COM blogs and not for WordPress.org software installs. If you don’t have a username account at WordPress.ORG click http://wordpress.org/support/ and register one on the top right hand corner of the page that opens, so you can post to the support forums there and receive advice from WordPress.ORG bloggers.

Could this website be a WordPress.org site?

I guess I shouldn’t have said “installed.” She signed up for WordPress before I did. Her site said she needed updates, so she clicked on the update key and it said it was updated.
Can she close that site and reopen another one with the same name?
If she does that, will she have to recreate the site again?
    Thanks for your help!

That is a WordPress.ORG site – running 3.8.1 which I think is the current stable release

  • Unknown's avatar

WordPress.COM sites will all have “Blog at WordPress.com” in the footer, since your friend’s site says “Powered by WordPress,” it is a .ORG site.

  • Unknown's avatar

THAT explains a lot! So I guess she’ll just have to put up with fewer features. You have been a lifesaver!

Hooray! Now you understand us. Happy blogging.

I think it was the .com extension that had me confused. Thanks again!!!

Your friend can add Plugin’s to add features to her blog, she should look over at WordPress.ORG for them.

She should consider the JetPack Plugin and that will add many of the features found here – written by the people here

Many features are built in here to give your blog more performance & security and reliability – you can’t add Plugin’s here, so many of the features people want and need have been built in for you

Great suggestion. She probably would consider moving to WordPress.com–if she could keep her domain name–something I doubt would be possible.
We’ll take a look at their plugins.
    Thanks!

If your friend does not have a username account at WordPress.ORG she needs to go to http://wordpress.org/support/ and register one on the top right hand corner of the page that opens, so she can post to the correct support forums for her software and receive advice from WordPress.ORG bloggers.

Your friend can use their domain name here – simple

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

Get a blog here and move the content over them map the domain name to her new blog here

One caution – she should read the Terms of service here before moving to make sure she will not be doing something against the TOS and have the blog suspended

I think she does have a username account (she has to sign in using a username and password.) I’ll also suggest the WordPress.org support forums. That ought to help immensely.
