what will be the consequences of changing my wordpress.com blog address?
-
Hi
I want to change my current free blog address chandrabali.wordpress.com to say newname.wordpress.com and continue to use wordpress free blogging. I have already submitted my blog link to blogging community and post links to other websites. After changing the blog address if someone clicks on an old post link, for example http://chandrabali.wordpress.com/2014/11/02/x-y-z/ where will he be redirected? To the new blog address home page that is, newname.wordpress.com OR will it be automatically mapped with newname.wordpress.com/2014/11/02/x-y-z/. OR it will create a defunct link. Please clarify. And in last case what is the remedy? Please reply.
Thank you.

Hi chandrabali,
If you’d like to change your blog address and not lose your old address, you’ll have to change your address first, and remember to select not to discard the old address.
Here’s a support article that shows you how you are able to do so:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/changing-blog-address/This’ll create a new blog with all your data. After that, you’ll have to purchase a Site Redirect upgrade from the Store of your old blog, to get your permalinks redirected to your new blog. This will have to be renewed yearly, for as long as you wish your links to be redirected.
Please feel free to post back if you have any further questions about this!

Hi valentine, Thank you for replying to my query. If changing current blog address requires Site redirect upgrade then will it be better to register a custom domain name with wordpress?
I just read here – http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/register-domain/ that after registering a custom domain name “Your old address will still work, but we will automatically redirect traffic from your old address to your new one.” That means there is no need for any separate site redirection upgrade, right?
In that case, will current URLs, say, http://chandrabali.wordpress.com/2014/11/02/x-y-z/ automatically redirect to http://newdomainname.com/2014/11/02/x-y-z/ or users will simpy be redirected to the home page http://newdomainname.com?
I am asking this for a comparison. If the second option (registering domain name) is more practical then I’ll go for it. Please help me to clear my confusion.

Yes, that does sound more practical. Your blog will be accessible by both your WordPress.com address and that of your new domain’s!
