What will happen if WordPress removes www from the domain name?

If WordPress removes www from my domain name, will people still be able to find it if they DO type in www? We are looking to change it from http://www.finefoliage.wordpress.com to fine-foliage.com (finefoliage.com is already taken)
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Have you read this section? http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/register-domain/#before-upgrading-important-notes

Actually just a clarification;
1. We register this as http://www.fine-foliage.com
2. WordPress changes this to http://fine-foliage.com
3. We can tell people our url is http://www.fine-foliage.com
4. http://www.fine-foliage.com will still be directed to http://fine-foliage.comis that right?

Timethief – yes I did read that section which is why I had the question as it seemed to just be a one line statement. Did i miss a further explanation?

I flagged this thread so your get a definitive answer form Staff. Please do not purchase the domain with the “www” until they respond to you.

We actually strip out the www. for your convenience, and anyone visiting the www. version of your domain will be automatically redirected to the non-www version.
www is an old protocol from back when everything was under separate server hardware. www (www.example.com) was the web server, mail (mail.example.com) was the mail server, ftp (ftp.example.com) was the FTP server, print (print.example.com) was the print server, etc.
These days, everything is run under the web server, making www. redundant and a waste of four characters.
