What will happen to my current site?

    I currently have a wordpress blog – but I get the site hosted through a 3rd party. Their suscription is running out & I wasn’t going to renew it. What will happen to my current wordpress site? Will it automatically stay up – and become the free wordpress version? Do I need to do anything or would this be automatice –
    any other changes I’d need to be aware of?

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi –

    If you do not renew your hosting, the site is going to go down. Depending on your host, will depend on how long after that expiration that you can have it restored. I do not recommend this option at all.

    What you have described here are 2 different things and I want to try and clear up that confusion.

    Since you have a third party host, this means your site is running on a stand alone WordPress installation. Help for those sites come through your host or via the community at https://wordpress.org/support/ Running your own WordPress installation is very different from the managed environment and dedicated support team that is offered through WordPress.com.

    Please share your current site URL so that we can confirm which version you have.

    If a domain fails to renew on WordPress.com, yes, it would revert to a free site. You wouldn’t loose your content – but again, that is different from what I believe you have set up based on the post.

    Each year, you have to keep your domain renewed and your hosting active in order for your website to work. When you use WordPress.com those things are all managed in one place which makes it a bit easier.

    So whenever I touch or mess around with the the site- I do it through WordPress …
    But yes- my 2 sites are
    http://www.elizawren.com
    http://www.wrenkraft.com
    I plan to get it worked out eventually but (this is a different few weeks timingwise for me) if the site hosting ends will I lose my content? I think that’s my BIG question. Will it just be a WordPress address & my domain name will go to a ghost page – but my content is still intact with WordPress including blog dates & comments?

    elizawren.com and wrenkraft.com are both WordPress.org sites hosted by SingleHop (rather than WordPress.com):

    if the site hosting ends will I lose my content?

    As staff-zinnia mentioned, your self hosted sites and content will only be online while your hosting is active. When a domain expires, third party hosts usually assign a temporary domain to the site — but this is something I recommend checking on.

    Things work a little differently on WordPress.com because if a domain fails to renew, the site reverts back to a free plan and address.

    Do you want to continue hosting these sites with SingleHop or are you thinking about moving to WordPress.com?
