  Once I have confirmed and paid the fee, will the name appear to the public as http://www.richardmacconi.com, or http://www.richardmacconi.wordpress.com?

  Hi,

  You have to set the primary domain: https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/#setting-the-primary-domain

  This way, all your other domains will redirect to the primary one (http://www.richardmacconi.com)
