You can actually set it to be either one (ie mydomain.tld or nameofaccount.wordpress.com) as your default. It’s up to you.

I like the simple domain myself. There may be some google juice added in with using the wp.com domain but I don’t know if it would make enough difference.
I polietely ask that you do not direct questions to specific folks around here. One of the staff members kind of got offended recently when that occured in the past.

if you want it to show up as nameofaccount.wordpress.com, why bother buying the upgrade?

Sorry, I see messages directed all the time here and thought people here preferred it. Not a prob at all. The Google issue is one that I wondered about but I also keep coming back to the “then why change it” question. Thanks for the input!

I’d have to dig for the thread but considering it’s supposed to be a perminate redirect from the old wp.com domain to the newer one, it’s acceptable with Google to do it. I had no issues with redirecting with my two domains here when They got moved to their own domains.

I read on an earlier thread some advice about doing it in the first year, although that might have been for moving to self-hosting. To be honest, I’m not really sure what I want to do! My blog’s doing okay for a baby, but it’s probably beginner’s luck, and I would like a more professional url, but I don’t want to keep making changes. There’s something to be said for consistency, I think.

If your blog is new then perhaps this is a factor. If you move to a domain later your blog will lose it’s page rank and you will have to start from square one. You can of course bring the readers you have attracted with you. But if the blog is new then why not go for a domain now?
