    Hello mods,
When i log into word press, the landing page features “hot off the press” blogs. what criteria does wordpress use to feature one’s blog on the landing page (or home page)? is there a chance my blog could get featured as well?
    thanks.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I’m not an expert, just a tiny niche blogger, but one thing I would say is that if you pay close attention to your tags you’ll have a better chance of being featured at the top of the TAGS pages. I found out about this when I started getting a fair number of referrals from there and then realized that I was in the box at the top of several of the tag pages.

    Hi Evelyn,
Thanks for your reply, but is it just tags that determine whether or not wordpress will include you on their landing page? I’m talking about the page you land on when you first log in, where there are several featured blogs in boxes and the in the right hand side it shows “off the press” logs – e.g. how many blogs, how many words written, how many posts, etc.
I do pay attention to my tags altho I’m not an expert.
BTW, I’m from Canada too (Montreal)!

No, it is not just tags, in fact it isn’t tags at all. Read the titles of the different sections and that will give you a clue as to what it takes to get into those sections on your main dashboard page.

    TOP wordpress blogs
    TOP posts…
    FASTEST growing…

Every post will appear in the “Latest posts…” section but due to the vast number of posts made each minute, you are highly unlikely to see your blog listed there.

From what I can tell it’s based on traffic ie. the number of hits your blog gets.

Ah okay, thanks for the clarification. Looks like I got quite a ways to go. Sigh.

    I don’t think it’s just traffic either.

There is something in there that includes how many links a blog has. It’s been a while since I checked that out, but I remember some very lame food blogs being featured, different ones, day after day. They were participating in one of those online cooking events where everyone makes the same recipe and they all link to each other.

It’s based on tags to the extent that there’s a short list of tags they look at; only the top posts in those categories are considered for the front page. If your only tag is “Dialectical Materialism” you will never make the front page, even if you’re Karl Marx risen from the dead to win Dancing with the Stars.

That said, yes, you need LOTS of hits and a certain upward trajectory; you need to have some “juice,” some hotness factor which shows up in your hits. I’m of the opinion (which staff will neither confirm nor deny) that it’s the rate of increase in hits, rather than the absolute number, that does it.

Oh, and that kind of round-robin that Tess describes used to be very popular here, until people started reporting them for SEO games and their blogs started getting suspended. If it’s happening again, it’s probably a good idea to report it again.

    @raincoaster

As I said, it’s been a while since I’ve looked at the page where the top posts or featured or whatever.

What I was describing was not so much nefarious linking as more like memes or awards for stuff like “best girl blog” that were popular a few years ago (TG that’s passé).

On second thought, you probably are right…

What has the world come to when there are only TWO pages?

Staff used to have a list they published of the main tags they used to pull from : News, Entertainment, Politics, and who cares what the others were. None of them were “Cthulhu” so I never had a chance.

And yes, I know exactly the kind of game you’re talking about. It’s still banned here.

    LOL
and Cthulhu has only one page and yours is not the top blog!!!

    t’s still banned here.

so maybe it’s worth my time to look at those again…
