Whats a good way of promoting your blog

  • Unknown's avatar

    TT, thanks for the info.

I’m extremely disheartened to hear that if I complete this move to WordPress, wmtc readers will see adsense ads.

I’ve been working with a designer on revamping my site, I’ve been nagging WP support about when the importer will be ready… and all this time I didn’t know my blog would show ads.

If I had known, I never would have come here.

I already pay for webhosting in order to have my own domain name. But I don’t want to bother with downloading, installing and managing the software.

I’d gladly pay a little fee to be ad-free. If that’s not an option, I don’t know what I’ll do. I might just have to stay with Blogger. (Boooooo.)

    This sucks.

I sensed that was where you were coming from and although the bearer of bad tidings has to run the risk of being shot down, I decided to give you the heads up.
    Booo hooo indeed.
    (1) I can’t master the geekery to self host; I need the support here.
    (2) I know that folks at wordpress.org can wait for weeks to get answers.
    (3) And I can’t afford the web hosting.
So I’m hooped three times over. Pass me that crying towel. :(

I politely point out that there are other WMPu sites out there. :)

  • Unknown's avatar

Hey, I’m not going to shoot the messenger! :)

I appreciate your telling me. At least I found out before I imported my blog.

There is absolutely no way I will have ads on my blog. And I also can’t – and don’t want to – “master the geekery,” as you so eloquently put it. (Nice!)

So unless there’s a way to turn off the Adsense ads, this highly anticipated switch won’t be happening after all.

    :<(

“I politely point out that there are other WMPu sites out there. :) “

Thanks. I’m not going to start over with yet another site. I’m not going to pick a site out of a hat without knowing anything about it, and I don’t have the time and patience to research them.

I’m so sorry I wasted so much time here, but as I said, at least I found out before I imported my content. If I had done that, and then readers told me they saw ads, I’d go ballistic.

So TT, I truly thank you. You saved this new Canadian’s bacon.

Ahhh … a new Canuckistani {* warm embrace and kisses for both cheeks* }… Sheesh girlfriend and how did I guess you weren’t an American, eh? Perhaps it was because I didn’t see dollar signs in your eyes and a cash register where your heart should be. *lol*
Have your checked out what our gal wank has to say? http://wordpress.com/forums/topic.php?id=6937&page=2&replies=33

And did you know that what has been proposed thus far to appease the sleaze that turn to nastiness, name calling and abuse on the forum? They want their cut of adsense revenue, as wordpress gets it all now. So here’s the solution … wait for it … it’s a paid upgrade and an adsense widget, don’t you know.

    One final question, a long-shot, but…

Does it matter if you have your own domain name? I won’t be using a wordpress.com URL. Any chance this will save me from Adsense ads?

I’m pretty sure the answer is no, but I had to ask.

“Sheesh girlfriend and how did I guess you weren’t an American, eh? Perhaps it was because I didn’t see dollar signs in your eyes and a cash register where your heart should be.”

Sadly, there’s plenty of that in Canada, too. But yes, I’m an escapee from more than Blogger – I’m an escapee from the whole USofA. A defector. I’ve been in Canada 17 months.

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes “deep integration” both financially and culturally with the USA is the cancer that pervades my beloved country, killing it softly with the sound of greenbacks rubbed between forefingers and thumbs. But I can’t answer your question above; drmike can.

  • Unknown's avatar

laurak, not really. I think the wordpress.com name helps with the search engines as well. I’ve got a Google PR5 on my old blog here with pretty much no links to it anymore.

The adverts rarely show up to the point that I really wouldn’t worry about it. if Automattic made money off of them, they would be a lot more common.

  • Unknown's avatar

Can’t say I’m into the Deep Integration paranoia myself. There’s enough healthy distrust and fear of the US in Canada to keep that from happening, IMO.

Consumer culture and love of money is everywhere. If Canada were immune, it would be the only place on earth that was.

“I think the wordpress.com name helps with the search engines as well.”

Thanks, but I love having my own URL. I have no trouble with search engines. I have a solid readership and my blog pops up on Google with all the right searches.

“The adverts rarely show up to the point that I really wouldn’t worry about it.”

    Can you explain further, please?

I can’t just not worry about it. If ads appear on my site, I can’t stay at WordPress. There’s no two ways about it. So I have to know.

  • Unknown's avatar

The adverts are going to pop up on occasion. Unless Automattic removes them completly, they’re going to be there. They won’t be there on a regular basis though. I’ve only seen them a handful of times and you can see how much time I spend around here.

I point you again to the list of WPMu sites a few posts up. A number of them can support domain hosting. You may want to give them a looksee.

    hope this helps,
    -drmike

Oh well. Thanks for the info. Goodbye, WordPress.

ummmm … please keep in touch and if you’re ever out on the coast and, if you can handle the most primitive of lifestyles, organic food and lots of rescued animals looking for love, then I’ll make space on my cabin floor for ya.

P.S. It’s very expensive to get to where I live from the mainland. I’m a couple of islands away from the big one.

  • Unknown's avatar

Thanks, TT, that’s a very sweet (and tempting!) offer. Many wmtc readers are in your area, so when (not if) I make it out there, I’lll add you to my list of people to visit! Very cool.

I’ve emailed support just to double confirm this before I leave. It’s not that I doubt any of the info in this forum. I just feel I should speak to someone before I leave, if only to give some feedback on why I’m going.

WordPress.com does confer extra googlejuice, no question. I don’t know if WordPress.org does the same, but I would suggest them as an alternative; surely you can find a student/intern who is savvy enough to set it up for you at a bargain price. Once it’s installed, unless you want to do some fancy things with it, it isn’t that much more work. I have a blog at each and while this one is my favorite in terms of ease of use, I’ve steered several friends to WordPress.org lately. It simply works better than most of the rest.

  • Unknown's avatar

Thanks, but I don’t need the Googlejuice. I’ve had my own domain name for a long time, and I pop up quickly on all the search engines with any appropriate search.

I’m not a good candidate for WordPress.org, I’m afraid. A friend who uses it has offered to help me, but I’d rather use a hosted service.

    Thanks.
