What's happened to media size settings?

Did I miss the memo? The “full” setting for media sizes is gone and the sizes left now designate the maximum sizes added to our libraries rather than to our posts. This has created chaos in my years of posts where I’ve specified “full” size so the images can adjust when I change themes.

It also seems to mean (with Chrome, but apparently not with Firefox) that in dozens or hundreds of posts where I’ve planned for and told readers to click on an image to see a larger size (one that is larger than the theme can display but is available in my library), they now don’t see it. Or they actually see a smaller image! (eg: http://piedtype.com/2011/04/24/the-floor-of-the-sky/) I’ve yet to figure out for sure if the display problem is browser-dependent.

Please help me understand why the “full” setting was removed and why my images no longer work as they used to. I can’t go back through more than 2,000 posts checking and adjusting every image and editing instructions to “click for larger image.”
