What’s My Best Option?
-
I would like to have certain widgets on my blog–like the Goodreads widget and various others, but WordPress.com doesn’t allow them. And I’d also like to have my blog have a more unique appearance. The problem is that I don’t know know enough to be able to run my own blog on WordPress.org. What do I actually need to know in order to run a wordpress.org blog? What are my options if I can’t do it myself?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Your options are to hire someone who does know, or to learn. WordPress.org blogs are not difficult to operate, but if you want “a more unique appearance” then you’re either going to have to become a web designer yourself or hire one. There are tons of themes out there, but if you can’t find one you like and can customize here, it’s unlikely you’ll find one that’s “unique” enough at WP.org. You’ll have to edit the actual theme itself.

You can use pretty much any widget on an external blog. There aren’t any javascript restrictions if you host it yourself.

Javascript and flash are responsible for a huge amount of security holes on websites, whether those holes are intentional or not. That is the reason they are not allowed here.
Also, if you do go self-hosted, be very very careful about the sources of the code you use. There are people out there that intentionally create attractive widget and plugin code that have malware in them. Sad, but true.

If you decide to stick with your wordpress.COM blog you can add certain flash widgets using the gigya shortcode in a text widget. If you want to customise the appearance of your blog you could always look in to getting the CSS upgrade. You cannot change the underlying theme but there are lots of possibilities for changing the styling and layout.
