What's the best theme that can support every bell and whistle?

I’ve been experimenting with different themes. Sometimes I put a lot of time into one that I think is decent, only to find it doesn’t do something I want, or can’t run a widget or a plug-in that looks interesting.
Is there a WordPress theme that will support almost all plug-ins? I’d hate to spend $60.00 and then find out it’s not what I wanted.
What I’m looking for is simple; I want a front page with a background I can pick myself. It would be a photo/wallpaper type thing with one row of links to other pages. I want the other pages to have their own wallpaper different from my home page. There’s so many to choose from it’s like getting lost in a maze. Free would be better, of course.

You mentioned plugins, so it sounds like you might be looking for a theme to run on your self-hosted site, with the WordPress software on your own hosting, is that right?
These forums are for folks with sites here on WordPress.com, where there is a much more limited set of themes available, so if you are in fact looking for a theme for your self-hosted site, I’d suggest you ask over in the WordPress.org themes forums for self-hosted folks:
