What's the best way to do this?
-
We want to design a wordpress site that will enable our Boy Scout council to receive payments online and register participants in special events. What’s the best way to go, and what themes could we use? (Our council office already has a merchant services provider to receive payments over the phone.)
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi Larry – You might look into Eventbrite:
http://en.blog.wordpress.com/2013/09/16/eventbrite-themes-widgets/We have themes and widgets for built-in EventBrite integration.
Otherwise, you can install a PayPal button on your site for payments:
PayPalThere’s also an Upcoming Events widget you can use to display a timeline of upcoming events:

How does a payment gateway for online credit card payments work? Does it have to be used in conjunction with a specific merchant services provider? What plugin would we use?
-
Hi Larry – You can’t accept payments directly on WordPress.com, but you can connect your site to PayPal and/or to EventBrite and then the payments would be handled through your account with them. If that won’t work for your purposes, you might look into a self-hosted WordPress site, where you could use some additional plugins for payment purposes. You can read more about the differences here:

Thanks. I did some research and have covered all the payment gateway bases.
My issue now is, how does one set up pages with reservation forms when there appears to be no provision for adding plugins to the dashboard? On my other wordpress sites (eg.: http://campcoker.info ) a plugin feature is included.

In other words, in the Expound theme, which I like, there’s a built in plugin installer in the http://campcoker.info dashboard, but there’s none in the Expound theme I’m trying to use for the peedeescouts.wordpress.com site I want to design. How else can I add the necessary forms?

Hi Larry – Plugins are a feature of self-hosted WordPress sites. They’re not permitted here at WordPress.com for security reasons, but a lot of the things people use plugins for are built in here, so they’re often not necessary.
It depends on what type of site you want to build. We have contact forms you could use as reservation forms:
Contact FormBut if contact forms and PayPal or EventBrite integration are not sufficient for your site, you’ll want to go with a self-hosted WordPress site so you can install whatever plugins you need for this. You can read more about the differences here:
