What's the deal with all the spammy subscribers to my blog?

Over the past week I’ve been getting a crazy amount of new followers to one of my blogs. I’ve had like 200 subscriptions in that time, which is waaaay above average and they’re all from spammy-looking email addresses. Some are following by email while others are WordPress.com accounts.
My question is why? Spammy comments I understand at least, but I’m not sure why it would benefit these ‘people’ to follow me?

Hi there, it is possible for spammers to follow your blog, although it isn’t something you need to worry about. Pretty much the only thing they have to gain by following you is getting you to visit or follow their blog through the notification email.
If those followers have blogs that contain spam content, please report it following this guide: http://en.support.wordpress.com/report-blogs/
