You can’t edit the underlying code in a wordpress.com site. There are some modifications you can make if you buy the CSS upgrage.

I just want to insert an adsense block, so it appears above my latest post on the homepage.
Surely this just means dropping the right code in the right place… I don’t want to edit the actual wordpress code.
I just need to know what page I’m dealing with, thanks.

You won’t be able to do that. Also, you need to read the info on the types of blogs allowed. If you want adsense in your site, another host will be better for you. The free wordpress.COM hosted sites cannot include adsense. Any advertising links that are not allowed are automatically stripped.

Then you need to go to wordpress.org support, if you have wordpress software installed on another host. :-) We can only help with .com blogs, since they are very different.
The link in your name does lead to a wordpress.com site, hence my assumption that you were asking about a wordpress.com issue.
