what's this tip about

  • Unknown's avatar

I am puzzled why I keep getting the following tip at the top of my dashboard: “You’re one step away from using eyeonenvironment.com as your blog address. Click here to activate eyeonenvironment.com.”

The reason I’m puzzled is that I thought I already had activated this, as WordPress registered (and has since renewed) that domain name for me – in fact I just recently received my annual notice that renewal is coming up in early August, which I appreciate.

So is this “tip” something that automatically displays on everyone’s dashboard, no matter what their domain name status? Or am I misunderstanding it and it really means something else?

    thanks very much

    Hi there!

You do have the domain renewed, but in Store -> Domains, you’re using your “eyeonenvironment.wordpress.com” as your primary blog address. Since you’re paying for a custom domain, the system assumes you want to use that as your primary blog address and gives you that tip to help you complete that process.

To complete this, go to Store -> Domains and click the button next to “eyeonenvironment.com” and click the “update primary domain” button. Once you do that, the tip should be gone.

I hope that clarifies things! Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks! I’ll do this, and will get back to you if I have any further questions.

Turns out I do have another question. I tried updating primary domain, as you suggested. However, once I had done that, I then got a “too many redirects” (or something like that) error message when I tried to access my own site – and realized that anyone else who might try to get to one of my posts or pages (e.g. through an already-existing link on another WP site, twitter page or whatever) might also get such a message rather than being automatically redirected to the page they’re looking for. So I changed it back to the old URL rather than the custom domain. How do I update the primary domain without running into this problem again? Thanks very much.

I just went to your site and it appears that your domain is working properly now. Were you able to figure out the problem on your own?

Let me know if you still need assistance and I’ll be happy to help.

No, it’s not working properly. It seems to have reverted to the domain name – I’m not sure why, as I reset it to the WordPress domain the other day. Now, with the primary domain set to the domain name, I again get a message when I try to go to the site that says:
“This webpage has a redirect loop.
The webpage at http://eyeonenvironment.com/ has resulted in too many redirects. Clearing your cookies for this site or allowing third-party cookies may fix the problem. If not, it is possibly a server configuration issue and not a problem with your computer.”

So, at least for the short term, I have reset it (AGAIN!) to the WordPress domain. I want to know that other people who click on a link to my site that has the wordpress domain name won’t similarly get a redirect loop message, before I feel confident about setting the primary domain.

Yes, that’s a common problem when you have an old version of your site’s cache in your local server. Since the domain works properly on my end (and I tested on a number of different computers to make sure), signs point to an older version of your site is being cached and causing this error.

To fix it, switch the URL back to your custom domain and if/when the error pops up again, keep the custom domain enabled and follow the instructions to clear your local cache and cookies:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/#clear-your-cache-and-cookies

You may also need to restart your browser to see the change.

Let me know if you have any questions!
