What's with the non-intuitive nature of WordPress?!?!
-
It is extremely user-hostile, to the extent that one has to second-guess, or double think how to get to something as simple as changing a font, or font size, only to hit a dead end! I love the breadth of offerings, but it sure would help if you didn’t have so many cooks in the kitchen.
Completely schizophrenic site/platform, if you ask me.
I’ll give it some more time, but I am not hopeful.

There are a couple of hundred templates here, the hosting is free, and all the headaches of paying a host and managing your own site are taken care of for you.
And yes, there are incredibly many options to personalize your site, thus that means it can be complicated to use. It is a sophisticated platform.
Or extremely simple to use, if you come without a too many preconceived ideas and an interest in a little bit of learning about the software.
Have you worked through the tutorial:
http://learn.wordpress.com/
which will get you oriented to how this platform works?…how to get to something as simple as changing a font, or font size,…
I’m a volunteer who is a fellow blogger like you (only you have no posts yet), so I have no interest whether you continue here or move on. But these forums have been available for as long as you have had an account here, with many of us volunteers (and staff) willing and able to help with any questions you’ve had.
So for changing a font for your entire site, you’ll want to buy the CSS upgrade (or find a theme for free with a font you already like):
http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/
for only $30 per year. Plus help with learning how to use CSS, even advise about how to do exactly what you like…If you want to change the font color or size only occasionally on a post or page here and there, then there are easy to use html text code options we can help with for free.
My advice: give it a shot. Or not.
We would all be happy to answer specific questions whenever you are ready.

Good response, and I will check out the avenues you recommended, though I have been through a couple of tutorials, which are somewhat wandering and inconclusive. One note…would it be that tough to have two buttons, to shrink and enlarge font/type? It seems absurd that is an area where WP would think, “Time to charge for an upgrade!!”!!?!?!
I don’t blog on anything but political blogs, and have no plans to use the reader, here, so there probably won’t be any posts from me.
Thanks,
STeve -
I absolutely agree with svbkeller. This product is not easy to use. It’s really unreasonable to expect users to be inspecting elements and then writing their own CSS code to tweak things that should be tweakable from the Dashboard. And I paid the upgrade fee.
-
@svbkeller (STeve)
I don’t know if you have a blog on wp.com or not because your username is not linked to your site.Go into your dashboard -> Users -> Personal Settings -> then scroll down to ‘Account Details’. In the spot where it says ‘website’ fill in the address of your blog and save the changes.
I’m only a volunteer, but as for font size, especially if you have a theme with a very small font size, and you don’t want to spring for the $30/yr fee and learning curve for the CSS design upgrade, you can add a note in a text widget about how to make the size of fonts larger in your browser: for example in Firefox it’s view—>zoom (and there are keyboard shortcuts depending on your operating system).
-
Thanks for the support!! You can call me Styve…another inconvenience wrought by WP’s programmers…I had to change my user name a number of times, because admin indicated they already had the name on file, which I doubt was from me.
The site seems like it was assembled by a very disparate crowd, in talents, ability, leaning, etc… I like the sophistication, but I have stuff to get done, so do I really want to waste my time learning all the nuances of WordPress?!
-
@mbmast2013
Your username is also not linked to your site, so I cannot easily determine if you have a blog on WordPress.com or not.
That said, you are saying this platform is not easy to use, even though you paid for an upgrade. \
This is a very sophisticated platform which can be used in very complicated, personalized ways. But if one wants to simply write articles, post pictures, and have some widgets, then it can be , well, simple.
If you have questions about doing something a bit complicated, please feel free to ask specific questions (in a new thread, please) so we volunteers and staff can advise you. -
This is good…
you can add a note in a text widget about how to make the size of fonts larger in your browser: for example in Firefox it’s view—>zoom
Where would I have learned that, had I not voiced frustration here?!!?
Thanks,
Steve / Styve

Re- my user name not being linked to my site…another WP weakness, as I see it. It should be a snap, but instead, it’s a hassle.
-
@Styve
So do you have a specific question about what you want to do? Other than the CSS upgrade to make your text larger? Or if that is the question, then please start another thread in the CSS forum (most of us don’t have expertise on CSS but posting there will get you help). And seriously, if you have a question you need answered, we really to need a link to your site so we can see what you are talking about. -
-
@Styve
As for browsers being able to display different sizes of text (and images), it’s not a WordPress thing. That has been a convention for many many years. I remember Netscape had it way back when. But I don’t know, if you don’t do a lot of online things, like my boss, then yes it could be new information for you. I’ve showed her that several times and she still asks how to do it when she can’t see something. -
It’s not a CSS question, so don’t get all defensive and rail at me like I am asking a stupid question. WordPress is not that user-friendly…can we agree on that?! It may have too many elements, or may be too “sophisticated” for many non-programmers to really take full advantage of, especially given the tangled presentation.
The site I was trying to move to WP is at ARTMassagePDX.wordpress.com.
-
I wouldn’t think of using a browser function when working on a site likke WP. Like I said, that is good to know.
-
-
Oh, I was not railing at you! No, I understand that this platform can be confusing at first. And there are no stupid questions. Perhaps my response was a stupid answer, so I apologise.
http://artmassagepdx.wordpress.com/ is live and online. Your original post began with a question about changing fonts and font sizes. So are you now specifying that you are trying to move a blog from somewhere else to WordPress.com?
Or are you asking about the 404 error not found on your home page?
-
No, it’s a matter of it being easy to change font and size, midstream. For instance, there appears to be no easy way to segment a page by columns, and putting pictures where one wants them seems impossible…that is what I am talking about, when I say the site is user-hostile.
Thanks, but I have to hit it…
Best,
Steve

I was about to say the same: 3 a.m. plus and even with a nap earlier, I’m out…
remember Scarlet O’Hara:
Tomorrow is another day! -
I admire the commitment…must be something good in WordPress…just takes finding it, I s’pose.
