When adding a new post, all I get is HTML option
-
When I open up “Add New Post,” all I get is the option to edit it with HTML.
What happened to the regular way of editing? I don’t know HTML.
Thanks,
Christine

I searched support documentation found here for “missing visual editor” http://en.support.wordpress.com/ and got this result http://en.support.wordpress.com/missing-visual-editor/

On your dashboard, go to “Users” —> “Your Profile” —> “Visual Editor” —> untick “Disable the visual editor when writing” —> “Update Profile” (scroll down to see)

I’m now reverting to posting links rather than providing instructions that already exist in the support documentation. :)

Yes,
I do agree that people should check support articles first, butbut the search function of “Support” remains somewhat obscure—I’m aware that wp staff is working on updating the articles, but search terms must still be very specific: plural or not, slight difference of search words, sometimes exact spacing, and so on…
-
Yes, I’m aware of those limitations. Sometimes I use copy and paste answers with the link to the support documentation in it and a note about which terms I searched to produce the result may be helpful.
The bottom line is we volunteers choose either to teach newbies how to fish (search) or we fish (search) for them and they never learn how to search. I see members who are not newbies, who don’t know how to use Google search for wordpress.com support documentation and forum threads, and wait for us to retrieve for them, or who maybe know how to use internal and external search utilities but maybe too lazy to do it themselves. :)
My position is: Teach them how to fish. :)

I am thinking that adding the precise search terms to the tags on on each post would be a good idea.
For example, on this thread you used “missing visual editor” as the search term in support docs to find the answers. With common questions, eventually the tags here would actually lead newbies to relevant information in support.
I’ve done that a few times, but have not been doing it all the time, so the “tag cloud” in the forum sidebar is not showing more useful links/tags.
I don’t think explaining a specific solution is useless: lots of people do actually read these forums and never comment or ask questions directly…

Thanks for all your comments and help!
I never have any luck using search. I guess I don’t enter the correct terms. I never would have thought to search for “missing visual editor.” I am just not familiar with all the terms.

@glassart
Hello there. Most new people aren’t conversant with terminology. What I noticed first was that you knew the editor you had in front of you presented you with only the HTML option, because you said so. That’s when the first word came to mind and it was “editor”.Here are the results for searching the support documentation at http:// http://en.support.wordpress.com/ for the term “editor” http://en.support.wordpress.com/?s=editor
Bingo!Very best wishes with your blogging, learning new terminology, and with learning how to search too. :)

1Tess and Timethief,
1Tess, I followed your directions, but the box was not checked. So, I went to the link that Timethief provided which said to do the same thing. However, there was another option, which was to hit Control F5. This worked. Thanks for all your help!

Timethief,
I wouldn’t have thought of entering “editor” in a search, either. All I knew was that I couldn’t use the non-HTML way to make a post.
I noticed the “Visual” next to the HTML, which was blocked. I just used that in a search and got the same results as you got with “editor.”
Maybe you have taught me a little bit of how to catch my own fish :)
Thanks,
