When could we start uploading plugins on Business Plan?

When could we start uploading plugins for business plan users?
Searching the forums, I feel like a lot of the answers are no longer relevant now that plugins can be added.
For example, you can create a membership site now that plugins can be added, right? I’m seeing some forum answers that say that isn’t possible. However, I think those answers were pre-plugin days.
A wordpress.com page itself says that wordpress.com is as versatile as a self-hosted site. I assume this is because third party plugins and themes are now usable.
I haven’t been on the platform that long and just looking for some clarification.
Anybody have any insight on this?

Hello,
Yes, the Business plan includes the ability to install third-party plugins and themes. (See pricing here: https://wordpress.com/pricing/.)
Here’s the blog post about the recent addition which came out in August: https://en.blog.wordpress.com/2017/08/07/wordpress-com-business-now-supports-plugins-and-third-party-themes/
You can learn more about plugins and how they work on WordPress.com here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/plugins/
Here’s the link to the Plugin Browser or directory where you’ll be able to see which plugins are available. There are several listed for membership sites: https://wordpress.com/plugins/browse
Hope this helps! Please let us know if you have any additional questions.

Hi there,
While you can now install plugins on the Business Plan there’s an important caveat to membership plugins. To be added as a user at any level on a WordPress.com site you need to have your own WordPress.com account.
So if you add bbPress, for example, anyone trying to sign up as a member will be redirected to the page to create a WordPress.com username account if they don’t have one already, and you won’t have the ability to manage user accounts from the WP-Admin dashboard like you have on a self-hosted site. So you won’t be able to reset someone’s password for them, for example. They’ll have to do it themselves via the WordPress.com interface.
Plugins that affect our caching layer, or that attempts to modify Jetpack or the login screen in any way also don’t work here, as they conflict with default settings on the site which cannot be changed.

Thanks.
Do you have an example site that I could try so that I can see how this sign-up process works?
My goal is to create a site with a members-only area only where subscribing members can download documents.

Hi again!
WordPress.com does not offer example sites. You can sign up with a free plan which you can later upgrade. If you try the business plan but find it’s not for you, you can request a refund. Here are the instructions for refunds: https://en.support.wordpress.com/refunds/
Please check out the plugins directory linked in the previous replies. Some may have screenshots, or access to their own demo sites which you could try before purchasing.

I’ve set up bbPress on a test site if you want to try out the signup flow. It should work similarly with most membership plugins, but I can’t guarantee that.
