When does a free domain name expire?

  I was hoping to start up my academic website on wordpress, and I would like the domain “bradjones.wordpress.com.” The website tells me that it has already been taken, but when I type in the url, it seems to have been abandoned. Is there any way to claim that website or contact the owner?

  When does a free domain name expire?

  Never – no requirement to use a site to keep the name active

  Contact the person through the blog you want – WordPress.COM will not give out any contact details for privacy reasons

  you can register a custom domain name & map it to a blog here if you want
