When Gutenberg Says Code, Does it Mean HTML?
-
Okay, I’m curious to know the answer to this. When it mentions that Gutenberg has a viewable/image editor and code editor, do they mean HTML for the code they’re talking about for Gutenberg?
I sure hope so, as being able to shift to andwrite in html would make the absolute rotting garbage that is Gutenberg a bit more tolerable.
Also, I read somewhere that instead of editing code for a block, you can edit code for an entire page and post instead. Is this true? Is this also refering to html?
Is there any way to make the code editor for Gutenberg the default of the two modes? Is there any way to set edit all of page/post as default?
I’m asking this because if any or all of this is true, that kind of gives us bloggers a way to bypass the horrible block system altogether.
Another method I’m thinking of of relying on more to bypass having to deal with the block system as much as possible is to submit posts to my blog via email. Hopefully all of those features/settings will still remain available and intact despite the situation with the rotting garbage that is Gutenberg hanging over all of our heads.
Thank you!

Howdy –
The code blocks available on Gutenberg are outlined in more details on these pages.

– https://en.support.wordpress.com/wordpress-editor/blocks/custom-html-block/It’s not possible to edit the actual code when using our managed hosting environment at WordPress.com. Are you set up on WordPress.org? Could you share the site URL? Thanks.

Wait, what? Not possible? Then why is there an option/setting for Gutenberg posting that looks like it’s a code editor instead?
I looked at those pages but I think there’s a weird accessibility problem going on as my screen reader is having trouble navigating those pages.
I currently have my editor set to the only good one, which is the classic editor, and I’ll keep doing so until the day we’re all forced to use the garbage block system…But if I can find a way to bypass the blocks altogether or at least somewhat, the more the merrier.

Hi @robertleeblindbrown, Gutenberg’s code isn’t the same thing as HTML. I can imagine it’s difficult to understand in a screen reader, especially if you’re expecting HTML, but if you want to share more details about that so we can make it more accessible that’d be great. We want to make things as smooth as possible so that when we do eventually stop maintaining the old editor, the new one will work well for you.
If you like writing in HTML, would an HTML block work for you? You can also use the Classic block if you like the classic editor.

Yeah, well, that’s the thing though. The block system is not all that accessible. Yeah, there are keyboard shortcuts for them but they don’t seem to work very well. The last time I tried using one of them, I followed the instructions but it selected the wrong block and placed it in the wrong spot.
And honestly, I dread the block system if and when I ever feel the need to type out diaologue for a post. That just feels like it would be a tedious, unefficiant nightmare waiting to happen.
I guess I was hoping from what I read that there was some kind of work around to the garbage that is this block system.
I now understand why most of the other blind bloggers I know are jumping ship from this platform.
Personally, I’m hoping to find some way to make things easier for when the forced yet unwanted change happens, but I’m not seeing one. I’m not suprised, I’m just very disapointed and still very upset by all of this.
Maybe it wouldn’t be so much of a problem if the accessible work arounds weren’t so clunky or problematic, or if there were an easier method for people like me using a screen reader. Sigh. I’m not sure.

Hi there,
Did you receive my reply to you yesterday in https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/can-someone-please-change-the-word-editor-back-for-me/?
As I said there, you can still use the classic editor, as long as you’re not using one of our newer themes specifically created for the block editor. I’m still waiting for you to let us know in that thread which site you want switched back to the classic editor.
Accessibility is currently one of the primary focuses of the WordPress.org Core team in their work on the editor. You can find all the issues currently being worked on over there at this link:

Whoops, apparently I did not receive a notification for that. Sorry about that, I’ll go check that out and reply.
That’s interesting. Hopefully they will make it as smooth and accessible as the good and classy editor is. One can only hope. But I won’t be holding my breath for that. Been proven wrong too many times in the past for me to start doing that now.
