When I clicked "edit," all the former content was gone!

I am VERY new to wordpress, and know nothing! I actually signed up for it four years ago, but never did one thing with it. Now I want to begin, and wrote my first entry, and after publishing it, saw an opportunity to edit it. Since the only pic I had uploaded, and saw it was prominently over my first entry, I did want to add a note about just having received it from a friend I mailed it to fifty years ago — you can see how it would be important I state unequivocally that this is NOT what I look like at the moment! I was fifteen.

I’m afraid to leave the page, saving or not, and have lost everything I’d written before. So I’ve been in this loop where hitting Cancel gets you nowhere and hitting Save might save the empty page!

Anyone have some wisdom to bestow?

    Hi catwomangigi,

I see your post and photo from your April 22 post. Since it has been published you don’t have to worry about losing your content.

“The Revisions screen shows any backup copies of your post or page. Each time you save a draft or Update, a revision is saved. WordPress.com will store the last 25 revisions for each post or page on your blog. Revisions allow you to look back at the recent changes you’ve made and revert to an earlier version if necessary.”

    More information at this link:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/editors/page-post-revisions/

The text could be inserted in your content or inserted into the photo if you use a photo editor (like photoshop) then upload that edited image to your media library and use it as the featured image.

Since you don’t have to worry about losing content, try refreshing the screen or use another web browser to see if your content appears instead of the blank screen.

    Hope this helps.

Wow! Thank you, chrispwired! That is even better than the best I could have hoped for — which was ONE backed-up, pre-revision copy! 25! I’m in the right blogosphere! (Is that a word?)

So I went to your link and saw how you get to see all these revisions. So I really appreciate the feedback, and the remedy to the nervous tic I developed when I thought everything I’d written was gone. Yes, I also went to see, and the original post is the one that’s there. I do just wonder, however, when they have that “edit” button, why they don’t leave the text you wrote in place, so that you can make tiny edits in it? Why give you a blank page to start all over from? Well, I’m sure I will find the answers to all my questions as I fool around and learn.

Thank you again — very kind of you. Tic is all gone! :)

    Happy to help!

In my experience the content does stay. The white screen could be a browser/cashing issue. Clearing the cache is good to do regularly.

Make sure you have all your passwords and login information recorded somewhere because clearing the cache signs you out. Here’s more on clearing cache:

Yes, in my opinion we are in the best blogosphere!

    Happy learning!
