When I made my blog public….
-
When I made my blog public, I think I was able to put in some keywords that would be used to help SEO. Now I realise I missed one out, but can’t see how to get it back in. Is the only way to make it private and make it public again? I worry I’ll miss out some I already have and need, unless there is a way of seeing a list of them.
If anyone says I don’t have categories or tags then yes, I don’t – it struck me the only appropriate ones (siamese cats, kittens) would be so general as to not be much use. Or am I wrong about that?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Just go ahead and tag or categorize your posts as you see fit, even if they are very general categories. It helps the search engines place your posts. There is no need to take it private and then public again.
-
Retroactively tagging or categorizing old posts won’t do you much good. Far better is to move forward and make new posts with appropriate tags and categories.
-
It certainly doesn’t hurt to categorize old posts, if nothing else so that your visitors can get to lists of posts on certain categories such as kittens etc.

That’s true, but the SEO reference is why i made the remark. You’ll be on Page 20 or whatever of each tag or category and the SEO bonus is not huge. As well, you won’t get anyone clicking from category pages.

Your blog is very new, so adding categories at this point is a good idea.
Categories are useful for search engines, but they also help to organize your blog for yourself. That is, you can label posts by the names of the cats so it will be simple for you to find what you wrote about Cara or Monty or Mishka in the past.
Also, if you are breeding cats it would be useful to indicate where you are: city, state, or country. Presumably you want your readers to see the kittens you are offering, and your location is an important bit of information.

It was where I am that was the problem! I think I was able to add stuff like gccf, siamese cats and so on, forgot to include Lancashire. Am I dreaming I was able to do that?
I’ve altered the sticky post on the front page to include the county, and yes, it does matter though it’s surprising *to me!) in the UK how far some people will go for the right kitten.
Would you suggest adding my location as a tag? And categories vs tags – they seem very similar to me. I’ve read the WP article on categories vs tags and will mostly use categories as there won’t be many of them, and I can arrange them in a hierarchy once more pages are ready to go public.

Search engines treat categories and tags in the same way. Not categorizing and tagging the content in your blog posts is like purposely playing hide- and- seek with search engines and therefore, making it difficult for their users to find your blog.
By organizing your content by categories and tags, you are not only making it easier for your existing readers to navigate through your site, but you are also telling the search engine spiders how to index your blog to bring in more readers.
Categories are broad: tags are narrow and specific. See > http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2009/07/24/content-how-to-tag-and-categorize-it/
P.S. One of the most classic mistakes beginners make is keeping their blog private until they think it’s perfect. The next most classic mistake they make is to keep changing blog visibility from private to public and back again.

You can add tags and categories at any time. So just add “Lancashire” to appropriate posts. (and no, I would not be surprised how far people will travel in the U.S. to find the right kitten).
In terms of how search engines work, tags and categories are exactly the same. But Categories are a useful way for you to organize your blog. Categories can be listed in hierarchies, while tags can not.
The Category widget has options whereas the tag cloud is limited to 40? tags (sorry, I forget how many exactly) and you can’t control size of tags.
