when mapping a domain / subdomain what to do with www?

Hi, we currently own the sohoshorts.com domain and control the zone file. We have an A record for www that points to a hosting web server. The web server hosts a script that redirects to http://sohoshorts.wordpress.com/ – all good. However, we would like to map our domain and change our NS records to enable that but understand that you do not support the www record. What would you recommend we do as not sure how best to proceed. Ideally we would like the blog URL to display as http://<whatever>.sohoshorts.com.

Thank you

Hi there,

If I understand you correctly, you have a couple of choices. You are correct that we don’t really support “www” (in that we don’t keep the www in front of a domain name, however if a domain’s nameservers are pointed towards us, then the “www” still works, it is just reduced back to the regular domain name when it resolves. So if someone types in “www.sohoshorts.com” then when your site comes up all that remains in the URL bar is “sohoshorts.com”).

So. If you so desire, you can actually choose to point your domain’s nameservers towards us. Then you would manage the Zone File here. Alternatively, if you’d like to keep your Zone File on your own server, you can create a CNAME for “www” and point it towards sohoshorts.wordpress.com, which should resolve just fine.

By the way, those nameservers, if you choose to go that route, are:

NS1.WORDPRESS.COM
NS2.WORDPRESS.COM
NS3.WORDPRESS.COM

Let me know if you need anything else!
