when *previewing* post, "i0.wp.com/" appended to image URLS

  • Unknown's avatar

    I have a hosted wordpress.com account with a custom URL. For months now, I’ve experienced problems with image URLs. When previewing saved drafts, the following is appended to the image URLs: “i0.wp.com/” That breaks the link/image. When I publish the post, it publishes just fine. This occurs only when previewing.

    I’ve read about similar issues caused by jetpack, but I’m on a hosted account without plugins. No jetpack.

    Here’s an example of a link, copied from the HTML editor:

    <img src=”http://cube.crider.co.uk/visualcube.php?fmt=gif&size=200&case=R’D’RU2R’DR2UR’&stage=f2l&mc=aaa”>

    The URL (between the quotes) works — although not perfectly, since the ampersands are escaped to “&” (another frustrating issue).

    However, when I preview the post, the image is broken and the URL is “https://i0.wp.com/cube.crider.co.uk/visualcub…”

    Any suggestions on how to resolve the i0 issue?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi there!

    How are you adding these images to your post? Via the Add Media button? Or manually? Can you give me a link to one of the posts where you’re having this problem?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello. This occurs when I add the posts manually. I don’t think I can give you a link, since it’s occurring on unpublished *drafts* when previewing them. (If I generate a “request feedback” link, the link goes to a page that does show the images properly (no errant appendage).

    One factor I forgot to mention: This issue occurs in the classic editor but not the new one.

    She’s staff. She can see your unpublished drafts.

    Staff earlier explained that hotlinked images are cached by WPcom. What you are seeing (i0.wp.com), is the cached image URL.

    The reason you are seeing the Photon URL on your test blog is because it is hosted here at WordPress.com, which automatically uses the Photon service to cache images for improved performance. This is the default behaviour.

    @shawnajroberts: Here’s the preview link: https://adventuresincubing.wordpress.com/?p=8019&preview=true

    @justJennifer: Thank you for pointing me to that other thread. I had searched for related discussions but didn’t find that. I now understand about the caching (even without Jetpack) for wp.com hosted sites.

    The challenge is not that there is caching and a temporary URL change per se. The issue is that the process “breaks” the images for me, making the review process difficult. During previews, in place of an image, I get the broken image placeholder icon in my browser. Here’s a screen grab from a preview window.

    Thanks for the link! I’m seeing the same issue you are. However, I did some testing with this image URL and I’m not seeing the issue:

    I believe this is happening because your image URLs are not actual image URLs, but a sequence of PHP variables that returns an image:

    http://cube.crider.co.uk/visualcube.php?fmt=gif&stage=vh&size=150&alg=RUR%27U%27

    I’m not sure that we can fix this, but I’ll pass it on to our developers.

    I suspect you’re right, and feel stupid that I hadn’t thought of that. Unfortunately, I need to use that technique quite a bit during preview/drafting. Once I lock in a post, I “localize” the images by generating them, uploading them, and linking directly.

    Thanks for checking with the developers.

    I totally understand. (And kudos for finding some good cube images.. They used to all be so terrible and impossible to understand.)

    I’ll let you know when I hear back from the developers about this. :)

    Hi there! I just wanted to let you know that this should be fixed now. Let me know if there’s something else I can help with. :)

    I’m actually having this same issue on a live page.

    I have images hosted on Photobucket and I link to them in the page. 99% of the images have worked, but I have four very stubborn ones that give me the “Sorry this image has been moved or deleted” message even though they haven’t been moved.

    This is the page in question: https://rikkaidai.wordpress.com/doujinshi/

    I understand i0.wp.com is the photo caching. Does it update regularly to check if the links are correct? If so, how long before those “Sorry” messages go away?

    Switching to a different theme solved this issue, strange as that sounds.

    It is indeed fixed! Thank you for the help with this.

    @rikkaidai – That message is coming from Photobucket, not us. So this issue likely is not associated with our caching. Can you please open your own thread?
