When should Pilcrow Theme be available for WordPress.org?
-
Yep. They can be downloaded and put in a “pilcrow” folder in the themes directory of your self-hosted WordPress install.
-
Sounds easy but I’ve crawled through the .org site and haven’t figured out how to create a pilcrow folder that can then can have the files downloaded how? All I see is the browser method to acquire new themes for the site….
-
The easiest thing to do will be to wait for the official release at the WordPress.org Free Themes Directory. In the meantime, there’s always the Coraline Theme. It’s very similar to Pilcrow.
-
I uploaded a .zip file of the Pilcrow theme files you provided and it says it uploaded successfully but also gave the following warnings – are they a problem? Can they be rectified or just ignored?
Warning: fopen(/home/thetenn2/public_html/wp-content/themes/Revision-5413-pilcrow/style.css) [function.fopen]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/thetenn2/public_html/wp-includes/functions.php on line 4165

Got it installed – thanks for your help Themeshaper! I know who can get things done now…

Themeshaper, in your Jan 4 10:34 post, you wrote ” Transferring to a self-hosted site should be a snap with the exception of subscriptions. Those are exclusive to WordPress.com. “
This is a huge issue for me. I’ve collected subscribers on my WP.com Pilcrow and now want to self host on WP.org Pilcrow.
Firstly,
How can I transfer my current subscribers?
Secondly,
What is the equivalent for WP.org Pilcrow for this service?
Thx, Eden -
Subscribers have nothing to do with the theme if you are thinking it did.
You can export your subscribers by going to blog stats and in the “general” section click on subscriptions, then click the X active” next to “Site:” and you can download a CSV file. Unfortunately I’ve not found any email subscription services that allow you to import them (probably a hedge against spammers).
The built-in email subscription thing here is a wordpress.COM feature. It is not built into the core wordpress software, so no direct way of doing it.
I use feedburner’s subscription service, but there is no import.
Likely all your subscribers are going to have to “re-up” at your new site.
-
@ Thesacredpath, thanks for responding..
sounds like there is no email subscription option for .ORG ??? Does feedburner do the same thing by delivering a notification to a subscriber’s email ? What do you mean by “re-up”? It took me a long time to get these subscribers so I really don’t want to go through it with them again if I can help it.

You could try this plugin on your WordPress.org blog:
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/subscribe2/
Unfortunately, since you’re switching subscription systems, your email subscribers will need to resubscribe.
-
The WordPress.ORG software does not have a built in Subscribe Widget.
Feedburner should do the same thing (I have not used it) – you sign-up and then put a link on your site usually in the Sidebar (use a text widget probably)
You will need to ask your regular subscribers to subscribe again – there is no way of transferring a subscriber list. If you export your subscribers email and send them a separate email you will be in violation of several laws against spam depending on where you live or your subscribers live. Yes you will probably loose a few subscribers on the move.

Although the wordpress.COM blog subscription thing is a nice tool, this is exactly the reason I always suggest an outside service such as feedburner. You can move your blog anywhere and switch software without loosing subscribers.
@auxclass, with a self-hosted blog, you can use the slick feedburner javascript code in a text widget and everything happens right there on your site. No new windows opening or anything else. It works nicely in my experience.
