  saving wordpress site to file

  When attempting to use the import tool to move my current site to another (both WordPress free sites) I am asked to insert a file, the suggestion being that said file is on my computer somewhere. Do I need to save my existing site to my computer before attempting to import contents to another site?

  You need to export the content out into an XML file which you store on your computer. Then you import that XML file. See here please http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/#moving-between-wordpress-com-blogs
