When will a domain name be available again?

    Hi,
I have a basic question that I want to ask. I feel like I should know, but I’m new to WordPress.

I am trying to make a portfolio website using WordPress, because most of my friends use it as well. I got confused between WordPress.com and WordPress.org. I got a custom domain name from wordpress.com which I paid for. A few hours later I realized that I should have used WordPress.org instead; and I canceled the domain name.

I registered using wordpress.org, and went onto Bluehost. As I suspected the domain name is not available, nor do I have access to it.

I still want the domain name, is there anything that I can do? How long will it take before the name becomes available again?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I wil flag this for staff. They MIGHT be able to make it available again. Otherwise, you can wait an indefinite time and possibly miss it.

There are strict timelines for cancelling and reclaiming or renewing domain names that Automattic and WordPress do not have control of. But if you are patient, subscribe to this topic, and wait, staff will probably be able to assist you.

Hey raincoaster! Welcome back & happy holidays ≥^!^≤

Alright. I’ll continue to be hopeful until then. Thank you, raincoaster and 1tess!

If the staff can retrieve your domain name – then you just point the name servers to the proper name servers at your new host and you will be good to go with the domain name still registered here – then if you want after 60 days you can (if you want, but not required) transfer the domain name registration to a new registrar such as your current host

But if (when) you recover the domain name you bought through WordPress.com on GoDaddy, you can use it on your self-hosted site—as auxclass said. Once you get it back, you can transfer it after 60 days, but wp.com will be just as fine. You can even set up automatic renewal with wp.com so you will be billed and paid up without risk of losing the name again.

OK. I’m hoping that they can retrieve the domain…

    Hi there,

What domain did you cancel that you were hoping to get back? I’m happy to take a look for you.

  • Unknown's avatar

The domain that I canceled is olivia-g.com. I pressed the cancel link, however in when I got the confirmation email, I did not confirm it yet.

Ah, I was quite curious because I didn’t see a recent domain that was cancelled.

Without clicking that cancellation link, your domain was not cancelled. It should still be showing up in our account. So you can continue using it as normal. As suggested previously, you can point your domain towards other hosting providers through the use of nameservers for the first 60 days of the domain’s life, at which point you can just transfer the domain.

Let me know if you have any questions!

Thank you so much for your help! I still have a few questions:

When I log into my account, it still says cancellation pending (because I got the email, but did not click on the cancellation link). But when I go to a browser and type in my domain “olivia-g.com” instead it redirects me to http://oliviagdotcom2.wordpress.com/

I just want the domain, but I do not want to build my website using wordpress.com. I want to be able to use wordpress.org to modify my site. What should I do?

All you need to do is change your nameservers using the help article which I sent over earlier. You will be given nameservers by your new host, and once you have those you can access your domain’s settings under your Dashboard >> Store >> My Domains.

I updated your domain so that when you visit either oliviagdotcom2.wordpress.com or olivia-g.com you will be taken to your domain. Once you change those nameservers, entering either address will take you to your new site that you build at your new host.
