When will parked domain be available again?
-
Hi, long story here. I signed up for wordpress.com today, I got a little ahead of myself and needed to get a refund as a result. During the refund I also gave up the domain thinking that it would become available in the future. Now I’m curious if you can offer any insight as to when http://www.fieldandko.com will become available again.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi Alexander,
Thanks for the info! Rookie mistake on this one I guess. Hopefully it works out, if not, Just a bump in the road I guess.
Cheers,
Dan

Hi Dan,
The folks at WordPress.com are super helpful. I’ve seen threads where they were able to get back the domain. So keep your fingers crossed.
Thanks

Hi there,
As you cancelled the domain on the same day you bought it, it should be available again early next week, at which point you and anyone else can register it again at a different provider. I include the “anyone else” as there is a slight risk that you might lose the domain.
I can also still restore the domain to your WordPress.com account if you prefer. Then I can help you point the domain to another provider, and after 60 days you can transfer it away.
Let me know if you want me to restore it – I can still do that for the next 3 days.

Hi!
Okay, well that is good news that there is hope.
I’ve got a few follow up questions if that’s okay;
1) If I restore it, but I choose to move to a different site like wordpress.org, what would the process be on my behalf in regards to switching the domain to there?
2) If I restore it, what is the cost associated with that? And how long would I have that domain for?
3) I assume “point the domain to another provider” is more technical than it sounds, and that’s why it isn’t the same as transferring, could you provide a little insight into what pointing is, and why it’s different from transferring?
REALLY appreciate the assistance with this!
Thank you,
Dan

When you set up a hosting account with a new provider, you’ll need to tell them you want to connect a domain registered elsewhere. They will then give you either name servers, or IP addresses to use. You can add those to your domain at My Site ->Domains:
2) If I restore it, what is the cost associated with that? And how long would I have that domain for?
As your original payment was refunded, you’ll need to pay the registration cost for the domain, C$34. Domains are registered for a year at a time, so you’ll have the domain until 2 August 2018, even if you transfer the registration to another provider before that time.
3) I assume “point the domain to another provider” is more technical than it sounds, and that’s why it isn’t the same as transferring, could you provide a little insight into what pointing is, and why it’s different from transferring?
The place your domain is registered is your registrar. That’s who you pay for ownership of the domain.
The place who provides server space for your site is your hosting provider.
The two are often the same, but it doesn’t have to be. If your domain is registered with us, we are your registrar, but if it’s mapped to a site on someone else’s servers, they are your host.
The technical term for pointing a domain from the registrar to the host is called mapping. Mapping just creates a connection between the two, but the registration of the domain stays with the original registrar – us in this case.
But you can also transfer a domain between registrars, in which case you’ll pay the new registrar for ownership of the domain after the transfer, while we lose all control over the domain. New domains cannot be transferred for the first 60 days after purchase.

Wow – great answers!
Okay – so lets say that within the next month I’d like to start using fieldandko.com via wordpress.org. What would your advice be?
Also, if I was to go to wordpress.org, I’d need to find a host, correct? Do you have any recommendations for hosts? Blue Host? Host Gator?
Thank you,
Dan

Hi kokkieh,
Sorry to rush you, I wanted to reach out because I won’t be available Saturday/Sunday, so I’d like to make a decision sometime tomorrow and just wanted the last couple of questions answered.
Thank you,
Dan

If the domain is released, there is a risk that someone else might buy it before you register it again, but the risk is very small at this point given that it’s a brand new domain – domain squatters would not see it as a target yet.
So the simplest option for you would be to wait until next week, and then register the domain directly with the hosting provider you want to use. If you don’t want any risk at all of losing the domain, then the safest is to have us restore it, and then point it to your new host in the meantime.
Also, if I was to go to wordpress.org, I’d need to find a host, correct? Do you have any recommendations for hosts? Blue Host? Host Gator?
We recommend Pressable and Bluehost, as we know they have good infrastructure and support, though HostGator and SiteGround also have very good reputations in WordPress-hosting. Of the lot I’ve only used Pressable, though, so I can’t really give a personal recommendation :)
I suggest you take a look at https://get.wp.com/, and also at https://wordpress.org/hosting/ for more information.
But in the end, look at the cost of different hosting plans at different providers, and what those hosting plans include. Specifically, you’d want a host that offers security and backups already built in so you don’t need to spend money on premium plugins for those (though supplementing your host’s services with additional plugins is not necessarily a bad idea), and also look at what type of support they offer – do they only offer support with your hosting account, or with the WordPress software as well?
