When you buy a premium plan can you switch between different themes or do you pay additionally for the theme that you choose? eg Nextop theme
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

The premium plan does not include any premium themes. You can, of course, switch to any free theme https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/sort/free/ but premium themes https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/sort/premium/ are purchased as separate upgrades. https://en.support.wordpress.com/premium-themes/

The only themes we can use on WordPress.com hosted blogs are licensed and adapted to run on our multiuser software the themes are found here http://wordpress.com/themes/ and in your dashboard at > Appearance > Themes
There is no FTP access to free hosted WordPress.com blogs for security reasons and we cannot:
upload any third party themes,
create child themes,
create our own themes,
edit templates,
create own own layouts,
or use stylesheets from other themes.See: http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/adding-new-themes/
There is no upgrade you can purchase here at WordPress.COM that changes that reality.
Switching themes https://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/#switch-themes can be easily done, provided you are logged in as Admin under the same username account that registered the site. Themes are just “skins” on WordPress.COM hosted blogs. You can quickly and easily change themes on any WordPress.COM hosted blog to another one found here http://wordpress.com/themes/ and no data will be lost or negatively affected by the change. The only time you may have to do a lot of work is if you are changing to a dramatically different theme with different features and/or if you have done any CSS editing.
Provided you are logged in as Admin under the same username account that registered the blog go to Dashboard > Appearance > Themes, Browse themes until you find one you like and click the “activate” or the “preview” link, or type in the name of the theme you want to use when it appears.
The theme customizer https://en.support.wordpress.com/customizer/ provides a preview function for exactly that purpose ie. so you can view what a theme will appear like prior to changing one.

P.S. Nextop theme is a wordpress.ORG theme. You cannot run it on any site hosted by wordpress.COM so be clear on that.

Thank you!
I want to buy a domain name (.co.nz), get hosting, and get a website with a static home page, gallery page of photos, blog page, and purchasing page. Should I start with a premium plan and if none of those themes work buy a premium theme? Or if I want Nextop do I need to go about it another way?
-
if you upgrade from basic to premium plan do you pay the difference left over for the year remaining or do you end up having to pay both?
-
Hi @vickipayne, you would get a discount on the upgrade.
Nextop won’t work on our servers, but let us know what you like about it and we’ll try to suggest a theme that may work for you.
Also, I recommend adding some content to your site (posts and pages with images and text) so that the themes you try will have something to display.
-
Thanks Supernovia. Do you recommend to people wordpress.org for someone who can’t write code?
-
@vickipayne if you’re uncomfortable managing the technical end of things, or if you want a lot of support, I’d recommend staying on our servers but choosing one of our themes that works for you.
Or you could pick a host that specializes in WordPress and provides extra help as needed.
