Where are my images?!

  • Unknown's avatar

So I switched to wordpress.org in October and decided to move back to wordpress.com 2 days ago. I finally went to check my back and realized none of my pictures are there from all the posts I created when I was self hosting.

Where do I find them and how do I get them to transfer? When I initially did the transfer I followed the guide sent to me.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi,

Just to be sure, did you choose the option to download and import file attachments (media files) after uploading your XML to WordPress.com? I checked your site and the images are still linked to the old WordPress.org site, which is breaking them.

If you have done that step, please let us know so we can tag Staff and have them look at it.

I’m pretty sure I did that step 2 days ago.

Is there a way for me to check or the do that step again?

One way to do it would be to empty your site, import the XML file again, and choose the download media option after that. But! I am not sure if that will work or break even more things, as your domain now points to the WordPress.com nameservers, and the links to your media files are broken.

Please add the modlook tag to this thread, so Staff can take a look.

  • Hi there,

We can try to import your images for you, but we will need two conditions to be true:

    1) The WordPress.org site must still be online and public

    2) The WordPress.org site must still be at the same URL it was when you created the export file.

Unless those conditions are met, your media files cannot be imported, neither by you nor by us. If you’ve already taken the old site offline your only option is to manually re-upload your images again.

I’ve already cancelled my hosting account so I don’t think the .org site is still up. I went through the guides transfer and already reached out to them so I will see if someone contacts me back today and if there is anything they can do.

  • The problem is that the import file doesn’t contain the images themselves, but only links to where the images were stored in the other site’s library. If the images are no longer online, that means the links are pointing at something that no longer exists, so there is nothing for us to import.

When your previous web hosts reply, ask them if they still have a backup of your media files. Then you’ll at least have the images themselves so you can re-upload them manually.
