Bit confused. I have 2 blogs that are Sketch theme. Can’t remember what I did but I know I built ‘projects’. Then when I started page I chose the’portfolio template’. Looking at it now I see there is no option to Add project – why have a project? HAve to add media.
And now I want to add a portfolio to my Pilcrow blog where I ca showcase my artworks. So I did the activate Portfolio thing you guys speak of but it doesn’t give me a Portfolio page. Am muddled up indeed. Please help.

Two ways: Themes that support a portfolio page and/or the portfolio shortcode for themes that don’t support a portfolio page.

Let us know if you have more questions on that.

Thank you Justjennifer. Is it the writing in bold under ‘attributes’ If so do I copy and paste what I need? And if so where do I put it? I am not self-hosting – don’t have a stylesheet

If so do I copy and paste what I need?

When using the shortcode, the Attributes mentioned are the ones you can use.

Right below the list of Attributes on the Shortcode Support doc you have an actual example and what it does.

I assumed that your site using Pilcrow is also hosted on WordPress.com although you haven’t provided a link to it. You don’t need to change anything in the stylesheet of your theme in order to use the Portfolio shortcode.

A shortcode in general is a little bit of code that you add to your post or page that causes much bigger things to happen in the background when they run.

Here’s a list of all the available shortcodes we can use here on WordPress.com: https://en.support.wordpress.com/category/shortcodes/

Okay thanks I understand that – I embedded the example shortcode – just to test) into page I created. I have a project ready to place on that page – and the page has a menu name.

    https://lindswrit.wordpress.com/

With Sketch theme the project would show up (because of the option of choosing portfolio template for page attribute which I am assuming the shortcode does) As you can see the page isn’t working .
What could I have missed. Can’t find anything. In Menus I can select Project and I get a page with the title of the project and the project shows but the page template is wrong, plus it isn’t showing how I would like it to (as per nifty shortcode). Sorry to be such a pain. Would appreciate any insights.

Here’s what I get when I visit your Whimericks page lindswrit.wordpress.com/portfolio-2/

Your Portfolio Archive currently has no entries. You can start creating them on your dashboard.

In order for the portfolio shortcode to display projects, you need to have projects already created.

If you have projects already created, it may be a problem specific to Pilcrow.

I’d like to investigate further, but bedtime just happened here.

Poking around again on your site, you do have a portfolio page set up here lindswrit.wordpress.com/portfolio/ and one of the projects is Whimericks (clever that!). Is that the page you intended? If so, you can add that to your Custom Menu navbar in place of the current /portfolio-2/

At this point I don’t know how much more assistance I’m going to be, but I will point you to this Daily Post entry on Portfolios if you didn’t read it already from the link at the bottom of the Portfolios support doc. https://dailypost.wordpress.com/2015/01/08/portfolio-best-practices/

As justjennifer mentioned, you can use the built-in portfolio page at this link:

    https://lindswrit.wordpress.com/portfolio/

That page is automatically created to display all of your portfolio projects when you activate the Portfolios feature on a blog. You can also view the individual portfolio project you created here:

    https://lindswrit.wordpress.com/portfolio/whimericks/

You can add either of those links to your site’s custom menu if you want to link to those pages directly.

If you want to continue using the page you created at https://lindswrit.wordpress.com/portfolio-2/ you’ll just need to tweak the shortcode you’re using there. This is the code you added to that page:

    [portfolio display_types=true display_tags=false include_type=ui-design,app-design columns=3 showposts=10 orderby=title]

That example code won’t work on your site, since it is set up to only include portfolio projects with the project types ui-design and app-design, which you don’t have on your site. One option is to use the plain portfolio shortcode (without any extra attributes) like this:

    [portfolio]

Please let me know if you have any questions about that. :)

@rachelmcr-thanks for that! I felt like I was missing something obvious. :)

Hi Rachel and Justjennifer – thanks so much for both of yours’ input! I have thus far managed to get the portfolio thing working and I am uploading stuff to put in my projects and making those little featured images for my portfolio page. All good so far but I am now searching around for a way to get rid of the sidebar and the widgets – which appear on my blogpage – off of my projects. In Pilcrow you have ‘Format’ – ‘Aside, Standard, Image,Video, Quote, Link, when setting up a project, where one rather see Page attributes and just a place to say ‘no sidebar’. The projects seem to take on the page attributes of the front page. Any idea what ‘Format is? Thanks for all the help! I may have to opt for a page per portfolio section eventually as the blog ‘noise’ kind of interferes with the images….

The Portfolio page, being a built-in Page, you probably won’t be able to use the full page template if available.

However, you should be able to use widget visibility settings to keep them off the Portfolio page. https://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/#widget-visibility

While this may damper the sidebar noise, it most likely won’t increase the width of the Portfolio Page.

This great thank so much. I realise now that the page I created for my projects to be embedded in is a ‘page’ in the sense of having page attributes. The page the project is sitting on behaves more like a blog / posts page. Changing the visibility of the widgets on the page that the projects are on, hides them on the ‘project page’. The host page for the projects gets manipulated like all the other pages – by having page attributes. Project doesn’t have attributes. This has been very useful :) The widget trick is pretty nifty!
