Where can I confirm my wordpress.com

  • Unknown's avatar

How can I confirm if I have a wordpress.com account directly through wordpress.com and NOT through a plug in via Bluehost (which is how I originally set up (fumbled through as a newbie) my website? My Bluehost subscription is about to expire, and I understand that I don’t need to renew the hosting if I am a direct wordpress.com acct holder since wordpress.com is already the host. Thanks in advance for your help.

    WP.com: Unknown
    Jetpack: Yes
    Correct account: Yes

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to moderators and staff)

I have a feeling (now that I see my post’s auto description above “Jetpack: yes”) that this is NOT a direct wordpress.com account. If that is the case, is this the correct instructions for me to continue my website with wordpress.com WITHOUT Bluehost: https://wordpress.com/support/import/import-an-entire-wordpress-site/

Also, I want to keep my domain name. How does that work – am I transferring my domain? (https://wordpress.com/support/domains/incoming-domain-transfer/)

Is there a cost? Ideally, I want a free WP.com account but I am not sure if it requires a paid plan in order for me to keep my own domain name.

I’m a website builder novice and it seems a bit confusing at times. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Hi there –

Thanks for getting in touch. I know things can be a bit confusing when venturing in to the website world. I believe that I’ve addressed all of your questions below. Write back if I missed anything or further clarification is needed.

Yes, you have a WordPress.com account. That user name is emilysmah and it’s how you’re posting in the forum.

You may also have a WordPress.org account, which is a different login. When you build a “WordPress” website it is using the open source WordPress software.

On WordPress.com we use that software in a managed environment. This means that you get to focus on your content and project – while our team handles every single back end detail that you need to have a successful web presence.

Yes, you can keep your domain name and use it on WordPress.com. There are 2 different options for bringing that domain in to our system. You can either transfer it, or point it to us. Not all domains are eligible for transfer, one criteria is that they are 60 days old. There’s not a wrong option, either. Most folks find it helpful to proceed with a transfer because then your domain + hosting are all in one space. If the domain isn’t eligible for a transfer you can point it here until that that time comes.

The page below is going to explain this in more detail and have the instructions for how to move forward.

    https://wordpress.com/support/domain-connection-vs-domain-transfer/

WordPress.com offers free hosting. It’s important to us that folks are not limited by their ability to pay. However, if you’re using a custom domain like you’ve explained, then an upgraded hosting plan will be needed. This comes with many additional features to help you build web presence for whatever the project needs. The plans can be purchased by the month, or annually. The annual option has a nice savings and you’ll see that on https://wordpress.com/pricing/

The premium plan is a common starting point.

The next step is for us to learn more about your project. What goals do you have? What functionality do you need? All of these details will be helpful in figuring out the best starting point in the hosting plan options.

Thanks for the reply! Unfortunately, I am slightly more confused (sorry!) and hoping you could correct me where I am misunderstanding.

I am familair with the difference between wordpress.org and wordpress.com – as website builders/platforms – and that setting up an account directly through wordpress.com home site, you get the wordpress.com platform/version, HOWEVER, signing up through BlueHost, you can choose either a wordpress.org or wordpress.com platform/version. I signed up through BlueHost and have wordpress.com but, again, I set it up through BlueHost and I’ve seen other forum posts of users in similar situations and they are told that they have wordpress.com through a Bluehgost jetpag plug in. In addition, when I posted my original forum inquiry (see trail), the following info populated:

    WP.com: Unknown
    Jetpack: Yes
    Correct account: Yes

Why does WP.com say “unknown” and Jetpack say “YES”. Seeing that, I assumed I had my answer until I read your reply.

Either way, I just want to make sure that I can keep my website and domain without BlueHost. If you are definitely seeing my website as a wordpress.com hosted version/platform/website, then is there anything I need to do when Blue Host expires on Jan 15th?

Finally, I’ll likely need to select the cost effective $4 personal plan. I noticed that there is free domain for the first year. Does that apply to my exisiting doimain that is up for renewal as well?

Your continued assistance is greatly appreciated! Thank you!

  • The short answer is – while we’re not too familiar with the options Bluehost would provide you with, either way whether or not you went through the “.com” or “.org” route your content is hosted with Bluehost, and not here on WordPress.com.

We, like Bluehost, as a hosting service – we’re two separate companies. It kind of sounds like Bluehost have a choice which takes you through the flow to create a free WordPress.com account and connect your Bluehost-hosted WordPress website to that WordPress.com via the Jetpack plugin. Jetpack works as a ‘portal’ between WordPress.com and self-hosted WordPress websites; it provides functions like stats among other things.

Side note: if you were hosting your content here on WordPress.com, you’d either have a site which uses the free “.wordpress.com” address, or you’d have gone through a purchase flow here on WordPress.com to buy one of our plans!

So if your Bluehost hosting is expiring soon and you’d want to continue hosting with them, you’ll want to renew that hosting plan.

On the other hand if you’d want to migrate over to WordPress.com, then staff-zinnia’s comment above may be useful!

Perfect! Thank you – that’s the clarification I was looking for. Much appreciated.

Only thing – my other question: “I’ll likely need to select the cost effective $4 personal plan. I noticed that there is free domain for the first year. Does that apply to my exisiting doimain that is up for renewal as well?”

I I should NOT be asking this type of question in the forum, can you please advise where I should reach out? Thanls again!

  • Hi @emilysmah ! You can indeed transfer your domain here. That’s free with the annual plan, and it adds one year to the registration. You’ll just want to be sure to give yourself several days before the domain expires since there’s some waiting involved, and you’ll want the transfer complete before it expires.

Here’s how to transfer the domain in. If you buy the plan first, then work on the domain transfer, you’ll have access to direct support if you need it so you won’t need to ask further questions here.

    Hoping this helps!

THANK YOU so much! As you suggested, I would like to buy the plan and get the support access but here’s the problem, when I click on the $4 plan it takes me to a screen which asks me to choose a domain. When I enter my exisiting domain name, the next screen asks me if I want to connect or transfer. What am I supposed to choose? If I select CONNECT, will the domain still be free whan I actually transfer it in or is the domain credit used up already? If I select TRANSFER I’m stuck having to get support from this forum. What do I do? :(

  • Hi @emilysmah ! Do you see an option to “skip for now” ? Sometimes it’s just a text link in the corner.

  • @emilysmah or you may just have the free address as an option, too. Basically you’ll want to skip adding the domain for now, then swing back to that after you have the purchase. I hope that helps!

  • Unknown's avatar

    Unfortunately, no way to skip…

  • Unknown's avatar

I see I have an option to select FREE domain name. I’ll give that a try…

  • Yahoo! You got it. You’ll have direct support here now:
    https://wordpress.com/support/help-support-options/

Or, you’re always welcome to ask questions here in our community forums, too. Cheers!
