Where did the "underline" feature go in the classic editor (visual mode)???
-
I know it’s still available in the new editor’s “visual” (as opposed to html/ text) mode, but it’s always been there in the old classic editor as well, which I like a lot better than the new one. (for example when uploading photos – I don’t see any way to edit their attributes or even put in the “alt” info when uploading photos via the new editor)
All of a sudden I can’t find the “underline” button, it’s gone.
Why? Hoping this is some weird temporary glitch…The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi @ingridcc – no, it was removed quite some time ago already. You can still use keyboard shortcuts to underline text, but the reason it was removed is because underlined text is understood on the internet to be a web link.

PS The Justify text button was also removed around the same time as it caused issues with text responsiveness.

thanks justjennifer! It seems weird that there’s still an underline text button in the new editor, though, which is the default editor that most people use.
I could have sworn I used it pretty recently in the old editor too. I know it’s considered stylistically clumsy-looking to underline text even aside from the web link confusion, but sometimes I resort to it when I really want to emphasize something in a set of instructions and I’ve already italicized something else! I’ll check out the keyboard shortcuts, thanks. -
Hi there,
The WP-Admin editor is based on the core WordPress software that is maintained over on WordPress.org. It’s this core software that was changed to remove the underline option.
The My Sites editor on WordPress.com runs on a separate code base, and we haven’t removed the option from there yet, which is not to say it can’t or won’t happen at some point in the future.
You can use Ctr/Cmd-U to underline in either editor.
