Where do I do key word optimization?

  • Unknown's avatar

I signed up for a marketing package with Register.com, where I registered my site name. I am supposed to talk with them on the phone about key word optimization and do things to my site while we speak, and I have no idea where to do this.

PS I tried to change my registration to Word Press, but you don’t accept such changes.

    Hi there!

We don’t allow users access to the types of files most of these keyword services use. If you find this a necessary feature for your site, you may want to move to a self-hosted WordPress.org site. Here’s some information about the difference between WordPress.com and WordPress.org:

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

As for SEO-type site optimizations, WordPress.com does a lot of this for you already by making sure that all of our pages are setup to be indexed by search engines. You can read more about that here:

    Thanks for the above info.
I have now talked with Register.com (actually web.com) again and understand better what they want me to do.
Under Settings – General, where you are supposed to enter site title, we thought that meant the name of the web site, so we put QiFrontier.com. They are saying I should put a string of search words there, up to 75 characters.
Then we left tagline blank, because we thought that was like the sub-title of a book, and my site doesn’t have a sub-title. Apparently this should be a more literary statement of up to 150 characters.
    Is this all correct?
Thanks, Barbara (although perhaps I should sign myself “Clueless”)

    Hi there!

I’m not quite sure why Register.com wants you to do that, but your initial understanding of the Site Title and Tagline were correct. For example, when you search for my personal website this is what Google shows in the search results:

The bold “Shawna J Roberts” is my site title. And everything after the bar character (|) is my tagline “laughter, tea, and knitting”. The small blurb below that is the automatically created excerpt for my home page since I did not manually create one.

If you set up your Site Title and Tagline the way Register.com told you to, your site will look extremely strange in search results and people probably won’t click on it, which I think is the opposite of what you mean to do.

Let me know if you have more questions!

What you’re saying makes sense to me.
I will redo my site title to be Qi Frontier, instead of QiFrontier.com and will add a tagline.
Should taglines all be as short as yours?
And what words would someone need to type into a search box to find your blog — your name, of course, but also laughter, tea, and/or knitting? I.e., should the tagline contain the keywords to which web/Register is referring?
    Thanks, Barbara

Oh good. :) Your tagline doesn’t have to be as short as mine. I’d say a good tagline is descriptive and concise.

On WordPress.com sites, the best places to put your “keywords” is going to be included naturally in your content. Your posts and pages should be focused and include information that’s relevant to your site. You should make sure that your titles are accurate, not designed solely for click-baiting.

Thank you for the excellent article.
I continue to be perplexed, though, that web.com says one needs to resubmit to the search engines once every 30-45 days, or at least once a quarter. I did this once a year and a half ago, when I set up my site, and I thought that once you did this, it was done. That is also what one of the other articles you sent me links to said.
Will it mess things up if they submit a second time now, in my name?
    Thanks, Barbara

web.com says one needs to resubmit to the search engines once every 30-45 days, or at least once a quarter.

I think they’re probably referring to sites that aren’t managed by a collected host like you are here at WordPress.com. We already notify the major search engines of every change to your site, so you don’t really need to worry about this as much as you would if you were off hosted by yourself.

Will it mess things up if they submit a second time now, in my name?

You can always resubmit your site. It shouldn’t have any adverse effects.

Let me know if you have more questions. :)
