where do i start?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi

I just signed up. It takes me to my dashboard. I went to my blog and of course there’s nothing there yet. I cant seem to find any menu’s for ‘write new blog’ or something like that? Where do I start?

Also is there a pink background theme anywhere was only given choice of blue or grey, but keep seeing links to other themes such as dark wood and titan.

    Thanks

    Kati

  • Hi, Kati. You can add a new post to your blog by visiting Posts->Add New in your dashboard. And, also, in your dashboard, you can find and preview new themes by visiting Appearance->Themes.

Good luck with your new blog!

Thanks, I got a few pages up, but now when people put in my main address it says not found, cos i deleted the welcome bit that appeared when i went to look at site. (it didnt show in edit mode)

    http://katilea.wordpress.com/

I want the page that says ‘Home’ to appear at the above address. How do I do this please?

    Thanks

    Kati

  • Unknown's avatar

oh I forgot to mention under where it says ‘Kati’s blog’ is a line I didnt put there about ‘just another wordpress blog’ or something.. I don’t know where it came from as I only wrote ‘Kati’s Blog’ in the box.

How do I delete it or change it to something else?

    Thanks

This is where you change the Tagline under your Blog title > Settings > General

The fact you deleted the placeholder post is not problematic as soon as you publish a post that “404” (page not found) will disappear.

I have viewed your blog and if you don’t mind me saying so, it looks to me like you do not understand the differences between Pages and Posts.

Pages are for static content that rarely, if ever, changes. They cannot be assigned categories and tags and those keywords in categories, tags, titles, subtitles and the body of your posts is what brings in search engine traffic. Pages lack Google juice so if you want to have a blog that potential readers suing search engines can locate don’t playhide and seek with search engines. Don’t create a Page based structure.

    Pages vs Posts http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/

Creating Posts > Posts are entries that display in reverse chronological order on your blog’s front page. Posts are included in category lists, archives, and feeds. Posts are always associated with a date, which is included in the URL. They have far far more Google juice than pages. Other bloggers link to posts that they feel are relevant and authoritative when they create and publish their own posts. http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/

The contents of the static Pages you have created cannot be automatically transferred to posts but you can copy and paste them into posts and then delete the pages.

I also suggest you go here and find a theme that suits you and your blog contents > Appearance > Themes You can use the search utility and Feature Filters in your Dashboard > Appearance > Browse Themes > Feature Filters to locate themes of interest to you. (A-Z, Popular, Features)

Each theme has a thumbshot and a features summary description. You can browse and when you find one of interest you can click “Preview”. When you are ready to make your selection you can click “Activate”.

    @katilea

You might be interested in Sweet Blossoms (pink) and the Garland theme (customizable colors) specifically.

Also Andreas09, Day Dream, P2, Toni and Vigilance.

ok thanks. I wasn’t sure of difference when I started, but I decided I wanted to create some background information of pages that wont change anyway. Once I have those in place my idea was to use it like online journal and update about what’s happening in my life.

The journal/blogs wont make sense on their own unless I explain in depth everytime so if someone wants to know what is Ataxia they can go to page (not yet made) to understand why I might have put in blog that I needed new wheelchair for example.

I looked at themes but I choose one and it only showed the error page and there was no pages on side so had a bit of a panic until I managed to find original theme and switch it back! (thought I’d lost all pages I’d just made).

I was looking at how to change the blue to pink (keep same theme but change background colour and header/title part) but it only mentioned text colour.

cool thanks guys, I’ll check them out tomorrow. Do they all show my pages on side like default one? I tried one and my pages vanished so I panicked thinking I’d lost them all!!

  • Unknown's avatar

The error page shows up because you have deleted the sample “Hello World” post without publishing another, so your front has nothing to display.

Some themes display parent pages in the header. All themes except Monotone display all pages in the sidebar or bottombar if the Pages Widget is activated.

You can customize or select color options for Garland and the rest of the themes mentioned above via Appearance > “Theme Options” (or something similar, depending on the theme).

  • Unknown's avatar

In some of the color customizable themes you’ll need to type hex color codes, so this will be of help:

Every theme has a default display of widgets. When we move a single widget here > Appearance > Widgets we override the default display and those widgets disappear. This is not a problem.

Simply go here > Appearance > Widgets and drag the widgets you wish to use out of the Available widgets box and drop them into the Sidebar box. Then one at a time click the right corner of the widget and it will open. Those widgets that have options can then be configured. When done click “save” and “Close”.

This is the main link to the Widgets and Sidebars page. On that page you can click any individual link for any widget and see what the widget is for and decide whether or not you want to use it on your blog. http://en.support.wordpress.com/topic/widgets-sidebars/

hold the hex colour codes.. lol bit too technical just yet! First time ever attempting to design my own blogsite so you talking to complete novice!

When I go back to what was the ‘hello world’ page it now says ‘Not found, sorry but you are looking for something that isn’t here’ There’s no option to edit page further down as i thought thats all I’d need to do to change it and add a welcome message and a few pics.

If i get back into edit via one of my pages and choose ‘new post’ instead it will go in that space?

oh one last thing.. on my page called ‘More Than Words’ I just stuck some links there for now til i get round to writing page, but they haven’t come out as clickable links like they have on other pages (which were copied/pasted). What did I do wrong?

I’ll have another go tomorrow, its evening here (UK).

    Thanks for all your help

    Kati

I was looking at how to change the blue to pink (keep same theme but change background colour and header/title part) but it only mentioned text colour.

If you choose to stick with the default theme Kubrick then there is a header image generator you can use to create a header with rounded corners for it. http://bighugelabs.com/blogheader.php

Changing background colors (except in the Dark Wood theme) cannot be done on wordpress.com blogs without purchasing a CSS editing upgrade and doing the work yourself, and renewing the upgrade annually. As Kubrick is a theme comprised of multiple images it’s one of the worst themes to work with when it comes to custom CSS. It’s a huge photoshop job. http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-css/

Changing fonts can be done in one of three ways:
    (1) Without the CSS upgrade you can do this post by post and page by page.
    (2) You can use TypeKit Fonts. > Appearance > TypeKit Fonts
    (3) To change fonts throughout the entire blog requires a CSS editing upgrade.

Since there is no official support for the CSS upgrade, and very little unoffcial Volunteer support, I recommend that you don’t buy the upgrade unless you have at least moderate understanding of HTML and CSS because you must be prepared to do the work on your own.

If you are considering purchasing the upgrade, you can go to Appearance > Edit CSS. There wordpress has provided a preview function where you can try before you buy.

This is the support entry for creating links in posts and pages > http://en.support.wordpress.com/links/

Copying and pasting is problematic because doing that means you will have junk code and broken code. If you do copy and paste then you must use the icons in the ext editor so the junk can be stripped out. See Row 2 icons numbered 5 & 6 (5 Paste as Plain Text and 6 Paste from Word) in this illustration > http://en.support.wordpress.com/visual-editor/

Provided you did not permanently delete it then it’s in your Trash and you can locate it, recover it and edit it. See > http://en.support.wordpress.com/trash/#accessing-your-trash and the next section (Restoring from Trash) as well.

“What was the hello world page” isn’t a static page, it’s your blog front, designed to display your latest posts. You need to go to Posts > Add New and create a post.

Or you can go to Pages > Add New, create a suitable page, then set your front to display this page (under Settings > Reading).

Hewsut and I suggested which themes are suitable if you want a pink look. If you load one of those themes and go to Appearance > Theme Options, you’ll see that it’s not difficult: you just have to copy and paste the hex number for the color/s you prefer.
