Where do replies to blog post emails go?

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi, people tell me they have replied to posts but I never get a notification. These folks are subscribed to posts by email and I guess just ‘reply’ like a normal email. Where do they go?

    WP.com: Yes
    Jetpack: No
    Correct account: Yes

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi, if your site’s Discussion settings are set to moderate comments, they should be in your Pending Comments dashboard https://wordpress.com/comments/pending/194nepeanembers.wordpress.com

If you don’t see them there, please post back here with email addresses of the people who have replied by email. The email address will be redacted from public view, but forum staff will still be able to see it.

Thank you JustJennifer. Strangely, there are no comments following the post, nor any waiting to be approved?

I sent a reply from the email I received when the last post was made (sent from (email visible only to moderators and staff)) and I don’t get an error as sender, nor does it appear anywhere on the blog or dashboard?

My main concern is that the sender does not know it their message was not received.

    Thank you

  • Hi there,

When someone subscribes to your site, they will receive updates (every time you publish a new post) via email if that is the delivery option they have selected in their account preferences.

However, these notifications are sent using our (email visible only to moderators and staff) email address, so if someone replies directly to the email itself, that reply is not delivered back to you.

Instead the recipient must click on the link to your blog post, which will take them directly to your site. At the bottom of every blog post is a place to leave a comment and they can message you there. You can see for example that the comment form is added to the bottom of your most recent blog post automatically: https://194nepeanembers.wordpress.com/2023/03/24/ember-reminders-26-2022-23/

Thank you – I assumed that was what was happening. The troubling part is that the sender thinks they have successfully sent a message as no error is returned. Is that something that can be set up so those who reply understand their message does not go to me?

  • Hi again,

It would be up to the email client (the program they use for email) to display any error messages, so that is not something that is under our control.

I do have an idea though, you can encourage people to visit your site (where they can post a comment) and discourage them from replying via email. The way to do this is to not show your complete blog post in the email, but instead show a short excerpt with a button to continue reading directly on your site.

By showing just a teaser and not the full post, they will not be tempted to reply via email since the only way to read the full post is directly on your site.

You can do this by adding a “more block” anywhere in your post where you would like to cut things off with a “Continue Reading” link

It displays only the initial part of your post content in places where an excerpt is more appropriate than the full post content. This can in

    That’s great advice! Thank you.

@staff-totoro I assume you mean the donotreply email address? If so, that’s puzzling.

Before I answered above, I looked at my latest email notifications of new posts from the sites I follow and the email address the notification was sent from is comment-reply and replying to it generated a long email address being sent to a subdomain comment.wordpress.com (including on the latest News blog post).

So I don’t wonder if there isn’t a setting somewhere that should be changed? Or is the comment-reply address available only under certain conditions?

And now post-second cup of ☕…

Strangely, there are no comments following the post, nor any waiting to be approved?

@194nepeanembers looking at recent blog posts on your above site, it doesn’t seem that comments are enabled. Can you check your site’s Discussion settings to make sure they are?

And if they are enabled, open a recently published post to edit it and look at the Discussion module at the bottom in the Post tab in the right sidebar and see if you haven’t disabled commenting on a specific post. Also, if you create a new post by copying a draft post where comments are disabled, then that setting will carry over to the new post as well.

Let us know how that goes.
