where have all the www’s gone?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi

I have just domain mapped my wordpress blog to my own url – http://www.chichestersharks.co.uk. However, if you type that URL in to your browser bar, it re-directs to chichestersharks.co.uk.

    Two questions:

    1) i already have the url with the www’s listed in search – will this affect my listings?

    2) how do I change my settings to use the www by default?

    thanks for any help

    Gary

Using the www will restrict your readership: not everyone can actually get to www domains. Think of the www-less domain name as outranking the other. I don’t believe it really effects your listings as far as I know; I have some each way, and all the searches still come to the right place. The one place it DOES matter is Technorati, but you can always register the w-less one as well as the other there.

Having some urls with www. and some without will impact on your Google rankings because Google can’t be sure that both URLs are the same, so it assumes they are different. But you can set your canonical domain with Google Webmaster tools. Have a look at this url for more info: http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=44231

Also, and for what its worth, the www. is redundant and IMHO shouldn’t be used; http://no-www.org/ have more info. But since you have no choice with wordpress.com it doesn’t really matter.

thank you very much for your answers.

“But since you have no choice with wordpress.com it doesn’t really matter.” – this is essentially my answer then, WordPress do not give you the option of including www.

I’ll take a look at those pages derivadow
