Where have my edits gone???

  I just spent a large part of my evening editing and adding content to a very long blog post. I was saving my work regularly as I went along. When I finished the post and previewed it, I got a weird error message. Then, when I went back into the post, all my work had disappeared. There was a “more recent auto-save” message at the top of the post, so I clicked that. The revision history it sent me to contained none of the changes I made this evening. I’m tearing my hair out here. I really, really don’t want to lose all that work. Please, please somebody help me!

  In the editor, with that post open, go down below the edit window to the revision module. Any saves should be recorded there and you should be able to retrieve virtually all of your stuff. You might have to look back a couple of revisions if something went wrong during the last couple of them.

  No, none of edits from this evening are listed, other than the autosave. Only edits from last night are listed. I saved repeatedly but the Revisions history shows no evidence of this.

  Anytime you are working over the internet there is always the chance of this happening (which is why I will never move to the “cloud” without being forced at gunpoint).

  If you are on Windows, I would suggest getting the free blog client, Windows Live Writer. It is a great program and saves every post that you do right on your computer and when you are ready to publish your post, you publish it directly from WLW. There is no need to even use the editor for most things you do. And, it is feature rich and creates 100% compliant code.

  If you are on Mac, there is Ecto which is not free, but at around $20 doesn’t break the bank. I’ve used it for years and had virtually no problems with it.

  Sadly if the revisions are not listed there, then there really isn’t anything to recover. With the autosave and the revisions logging, WordPress has tried hard to keep this sort of thing from happening, but there is just so much that can go wrong between your fingers on the keyboard and the wordpress servers.
