Where is a site hosted?
-
Is there a way to find out if a WP themed site is being hosted on WP.com? The site in question is clipsart.net.
Thanks.

Hi,
It’s not hosted by WordPress.com.

According to the WHOIS record, it isn’t hosted on WordPress.com
Additionally, if you look at the footer of that site, you’ll see that it says “Proudly Powered by WordPress”, which is the footer found on many themes that are used on self-hosted installs of the WordPress software.

Apparently another forum volunteer already answered this question, but their answer got caught by the forum s p a m filter. Tagged for Staff assistance.

Thanks. The WhoIs record that I looked at doesn’t show any host at all. I saw the footer but didn’t know if it was something common to both. Alright, will have to continue searching.
-
Actually, the footer isn’t common to both Com and self-hosted sites.
The footer on WordPress.com sites says ” Blog at WordPress.com. | The XXX Theme.”
Additionally, if you are logged into WordPress.com at the time, you should see the black WPcom Admin bar at the top of your browser window when you visit a WordPress.com website. Your gravatar will appear in the right side of the Admin bar.

Some of the old legacy themes on WordPress.COM had the “Proudly Powered by WordPress”, for the footer – but the black Admin bar noted above is only on WordPress.COM

Actually the OP already marked this issue as resolved, but our additional answers removed that status.
The reason I’ve marked this thread for Staff followup with the “modlook” tag is because one of the forum volunteers is in the s p a m filter.

Also you can view the source code of the page by pressing Cltr+U in any browser (Windows) or cmd+U (mac).
Search for <meta name=”generator” content=”WordPress x.x.x” />
If the content says WordPress x.x.x (version) it’s self-hosted, if it says WordPress.com it’s hosted here. -
Search for <meta name=”generator” content=”WordPress x.x.x” />
If the content says WordPress x.x.x (version) it’s self-hosted,Not all WordPress.ORG installs will show that text, my guess is that it has something to do with the Theme and the theme designer
