Where is my “Appearance” section ?

Add topic to favorites
Can someone please tell me how I can have an “Appearances” section on the left hand side of the page? All I see now is “Dashboard”, with a drop down menu, but which does not include “Appearance”.

I am trying to upload a theme.

I just recently downloaded Word Press, and am trying to use it as a content management system. Maybe I should be on wordpress.org, instead of wordpress.com ?

Yes, support for the self-hosted version of wordpress is at http://wordpress.ORG/support/ .
