Where is My Blog?

I had a blog hosted on WordPress called at mydatinghell.com. I recently went to look at and it was gone, replaced by a website full of links to porn sites. Where is my blog? Where is my domain name?

I searched for mydatinghell.com in the WordPress.com records, and it doesn’t look like it was registered through WordPress.com in the past. I also checked the cityfeller WordPress.com account and there are no past purchase record for it there either. Based on my searches so far and with the current information, it looks to me like you may have had a WordPress setup in the past with a hosting provider other than WordPress.com.

It’s possible to setup a WordPress site through WordPress.com or through any number of other hosting providers.

My best suggestion for now is to search your records and your email to see if you can find any past reference to the domain to help you track down where it was originally purchased and setup and hosted.

You are right, I forgot that I had it hosted by an entity called bloglaunchr. I attempted to contact them using an email address I had and it bounced. I gather that the firm is out of business. Can you tell me if there is any way to recover my site? It must still exist, right? Please advise.

I’m so sorry but I don’t think there’s a way to recover a domain if it has already been legitimately registered somewhere else. You may be able to contact the current owner to see if they would sell the name back to you. I always figure it can’t hurt to ask. They may not take you up though.

You can check for domain ownership information at https://www.godaddy.com/whois

I want to recover the web site, not the domain. The website was authored in WordPress. It must still exist. I want to recover the site so I can relaunch it. How do I do this?

Based on a look at the old site in the wayback machine at https://web.archive.org/web/20120128101535/http://www.mydatinghell.com/ it seems the site was setup using WordPress software but it was not hosted here at WordPress.com. It is possible to use the free software available from WordPress.org at a company other than WordPress.com (which is the for-profit side of WordPress software and created by the same people and the naming can make it confusing!).

From everything I have researched, it looks like http://www.mydatinghell.com was setup using WordPress on a third-party web host but I don’t have a way to tell which one. The last record of that site online in the wayback machine is from 2012, and if the site is that old it’s unlikely a web host would have kept a backup that long. You can try to find out though! I would recommend searching your email records for any web hosting bills because that should help you find the company that you were using so you can ask to see if there’s any chance they may still have a backup available for you.

The mydatinghell.com site you are referring to isn’t mine. Mine was created several years later. I know the hosting company, but they no longer exist. Attempts to contact them get bounced emails. I can no longer log into my dashboard. They are gone, history. I want to recover my site, though. Is there no way to do this?

Aha, yes, if the hosting company no longer exists, then the data is likely gone too because that is where the data would have been stored. I don’t think you’ll be able to recover the old site unless by some chance you had made a backup and saved it yourself (which it sounds like you hadn’t). I’m sorry there isn’t better news than that!
