Everyone is free to register the domain they want.
What is the domain you are looking for?

Did you originally register the domain a year ago? If so you will need to reach out to the registrar to renew it. Then you can connect the domain to your site here at WordPress.com (with a paid plan). If the domain was registered by someone else then only they can renew it. If they don’t renew it then in a few months it may be come available for you to buy. Or you could move forward now with a similar domain ending in .com.
Domain: purleyradio.co.uk
Registrar: Media Elite Holdings Limited, S.A. [Tag = REGISTERMATRIXCH]
Status: Renewal required.
Name Servers:
ns1.namedynamics.net
ns2.namedynamics.net -
I dont remember registering it with any company of that name and namedynamics dont seem to exist

If you didn’t register that exactly worded domain address then someone else did and you can’t own it. The nameservers may just refer to the domain being expired and in its redemption period (which gives the owner a number of weeks to pay and reactivate the domain).

That domain has been in existence for over 20 years. Has it always been yours or are you perhaps wanting to use an address that someone else owns. Using a time machine here is a screenshot from 1999.

Yes it was mine and my company but no idea who has it now or if it is just held somewhere dormant

It looks like the domain was allowed to expire and someone else purchased it. As I said earlier
If the domain was registered by someone else then only they can renew it. If they don’t renew it then in a few months it may be come available for you to buy. Or you could move forward now with a similar domain ending in .com.
