Where is my history?

I own a domain (www.redstateconfessions.com) and have maintained a WordPress blog for 8 years. I have never had any problems…I go to the site by domain, write my column, then post my my comments. I have never changed my settings, never forgot to renew my domain (call Goddady for confirmation) but recently my blog disappeared…no connection to my domain, no history of my writings. This is a DISASTER…I have publications that print my comments and I have no back-ups. I need HELP!!! I have called your phone number and posted on your forums…no response. This is SERIOUS to me. Tell me what i need to do. HELP!!!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

It looks like your site was using self-hosted WordPress with GoDaddy, not with WordPress.com.

You will need to contact GoDaddy directly to ask for help. This forum can only provide support for sites hosted at WordPress.com.

Thanks for your input. However, I have never changed hosting agreements in the eight years I have had the site so I don’t know why it went away now. I called Godaddy last night (I do a LOT of business with them) but they cannot help me recover my history. I would be glad to have WordPress host the site and blog if I can recover my history. I appreciate these these “forums” but I would really like to get some help from WordPress directly, which appears to be impossible. Weird…I can call Godaddy a 4 AM…the ANSWER THEIR PHONE and you can talk to real live human being. I do a lot of business with WordPress too and this is the first time I have ever had a problem. I am getting very frustrated.

    Thanks anyway!

Did you ask GoDaddy why it says your domain is “parked” at GoDaddy, rather than pointing to a website? Maybe you just need to change a setting in your control panel to re-point it to your site?

Were you actually paying WordPress.com for anything, or was all your hosting & domain registration through GoDaddy? I looked up your site at archive.org and it looks like it was using self-hosted WordPress the last time they archived it. WordPress.com does not have any access to your site files if your site was not hosted at WordPress.com.

It can be a little confusing, but there are 2 separate entities called WordPress: the free software (available at WordPress.org and via one-click installation at many webhosts including GoDaddy) and the hosted version available at WordPress.com.

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

    Dear bookgirlMN,

THANK YOU! For the most informative and useful advice I have received so far on my problem. I hate to look like such a dunce, but this has really upset my apple cart. I have been working on the web since it was invented (I am 65) but my only experience with WordPress is with purchasing templates for the gazillion websites “we” (my webmaster and I) have built and the domains I maintain. Hosting is obviously the problem. My web old webmaster set up this blog and just told me to start posting, which I have done for eight years, without concern about who was hosting what. I have never paid anyone to post this blog…I assumed it was a free blog. I wasn’t being cheap…that was just the way it was set up. The pointing issue you raised sounds totally logical and I am trying to get that fixed. I have never changed any of my Godaddy setting but anything can get messed up. Thanks again. Saw your blog and your place sounds great (I love goats!) BTW, my sister-in-law is a self-taught botanist who gives speeches all over the world and is a real plant expert. Her site is http://www.ritasrareplants.com If you need anything, send her a message and tell her you are a friend of Tim Tucker and she will fix you up! I will let you know when I get my blog fixed. Thanks again for a BEING A GEEK SO I DON’T HAVE TO! (even if you ended a sentence with a proposition….hey, I can’t help it, I am a writer!)
