Where is the Notifications button?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Thanks for helping out, designsimply.

    No problem!

It’s not working again on my blog. It just spins and never opens up.

All righty, thanks for trying it again. The very most helpful thing I can get from anyone about the problem where the dropdown works but the spinner never goes away and the notifications don’t load is a screenshot showing the console panel in their browser. If you can get one, great! If you can’t or aren’t sure or don’t have time to get one, don’t worry about it and I will keep looking for details from others. Here is an example of a helpful screenshot for this issue that johnjronline posted earlier in this thread:
    https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/where-is-the-notifications-button/page/2?replies=60#post-2139820

Yes, my drop down looks just like johnjrronline’s screenshot. It shows the spinning and the notifications not showing up.

It happened last week on my blog, then it was fixed after a couple of days. I’m kind of surprised that it’s happening again.

Gotcha. The part showing whether or not there are any JavaScript errors highlighted in red in the browser panel is what I’m after. Like this: https://cloudup.com/cZwxqLoccZT

I’m kind of surprised that it’s happening again.

There’s some work going on around that feature right now. :)

Notifications are still working for me (My Firefox setting for Privacy | History | is set to Firefox Will Never Remember History which uses the same settings as Permanent Private Mode, and maybe this is a factor because cookies/history/et cetera are cleared every time that I exit my browser) (https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/delete-browsing-search-download-history-firefox#w_how-do-i-make-firefox-clear-my-history-automatically).

Dandelionsalad have you tried clearing your Cache yet (http://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/) and then trying it?

Designsimply, is this the forum you meant?
Sorry but, No Notifications in WordPress.com either. I have a screenshot of that area of the screen but don’t know how to include it in this post. Sorry also about time delay (6.00am here) and the computer will be not working for a day or two (unavoidable) so I won’t be able to respond (Not being rude)

    Hello Danudin,

I usually upload my screenshots/images to MediaCrush (https://mediacru.sh/) for free (no account needed) and all you have to do is copy the link for the image(s) to this topic.

There is also the WordPress.com Support page for learning how to make Screenshots:

This works. I think the other thread you posted in might have been a totally different issue.

No worries at all about the time delay, this issue looks tricky and might not get sorted out until later anyway.

I think this was your original report of the notifications trouble you are having: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/notifications-not-loading-6?replies=8#post-2137433

    You said:

Notifications seems to have disappeared the day before yesterday.

A screenshot would help me see what you’re seeing, however, the first thing it would help to know is exactly what your complaint is. Are you not seeing the icon at all (that’s what I thought at first but now I’m not sure) or is it that you see the notifications icon but when you click it it just hangs? As for where it should be located, it should be on the right side of the toolbar at the top level (not underneath any other menu item).

    Hello Designsimply,

Since notifications started back working I have noticed some problems with it where people’s Gravatars, links to their blogs, et cetera do not show up when you hover over them or when you click on them; and when you click on them only a white box shows, and the alignment of notifications looks a bit off.

I know that they are still working on this, but I just wanted to report this so that they will know. ;)

Thought I’d jump in here and say that my notification bubble is not showing my notifications probably. It’s all blurred when I click on it. I’m using firefox 33.1. Would the update help? It seems like people with the newer version have had it happen anyway. Just thought I’d mention it in case it helps to know more people are struggling with this issue. I don’t know how to do a screen shot off the top of my head (I forgot), but if I need to, I’ll check back later and try to put one up. I’m limited on time right now. Thanks for any help you can offer. ~ Lori

That was supposed to be not showing my notifications *properly.* Auto-correct for typos is not always a good thing. :-P

Designsimply, good to hear that the time constraints don’t cause a hassle.
I still have difficulty navigating the Forum threads so please try and make allowance for the old and incompetent (loL)
    My complaint (Concern really)
I used to access notifications by clicking on the W logo on the top LEFT hand page of my blog (Down Under in 2014) then about a week ago it’s (notifications) location shifted to the drop down menu of the reader menu and the W logo on my blog changed into a stylized globe (I have a jpeg screenshot of this, taken with the snipping tool but don’t know how to include it with this post) Now I don’t even have a button to click on anywhere (Especially on the right of the tool bar which gives me access to notifications).

The url provided is an excellent work-a-round but It seems that WP has lost some of it’s functionality for me (as a neophyte in the Social Media World). I hope this provides you with a more complete concept of my concerns . Again I must apologize for not being in contact over the next few days!

Thought I’d jump in here and say that my notification bubble is not showing my notifications properly. It’s all blurred when I click on it.

Blurred? Or is the formatting off? A screenshot would be great if you have the time to get one for us so I can see what you are seeing.

I don’t think one point release matters much for this particular issue.

Just thought I’d mention it in case it helps to know more people are struggling with this issue.

    It definitely helps!

Thanks again, designsimply. Also noticed the notification button is missing from the Forum pages like you mentioned.

Yes, my screenshot looks exactly like johnjronline’s.

Thanks, johnjronline, I’ve cleared history, cookies, cache many times. Also tried the website you suggested but couldn’t get it to work.

Hi designsimply. I guess it would be the formatting is off and that’s why it looked blurry to me. Here is the screen shot. I hope I did it right. Thanks.

You are welcome Dandelionsalad and I am glad that you were able to post a screenshot :) , I am sorry that it did not work, but they will probably fix it eventually. ;)

@loridr, yep, that looks formatting related—which is different from the other problems mentioned in this thread. All of the issues sort of got jumbled! And I was trying to help straighten them out. I tried testing the formatting bug myself and could never see it in my testing, but we reported the screenshots everyone provided (yay for screenshots!) and the developers made a small update. At least one person so far reported that the formatting problem is fixed for them now. Could you have a look over at https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/notifications-tab-not-working?replies=28 ?

  • Unknown's avatar

Hey designsimply, just got on this morning and saw your note. YAY it’s working. Thank you for taking care of this problem and the others in this thread … and for also being so patient and nice about it. Have a great holiday. ~ Lori

Thanks Lori! Glad to hear the formatting trouble is fixed. Now Thanksgiving will be ready for all your blog comments and likes!! :)

    @danudin

I still have difficulty navigating the Forum threads so please try and make allowance for the old and incompetent (loL)

I didn’t think of that! It helps me a lot to organized things into one bug per thread so I can really dig into the details and see what’s going on. For notifications, everyone sort of piled on to one place and I was just trying to sort it out. So, don’t be offended if I ask you to move to another thread—it’s just me trying to organize. Noooo worries. :)

    My complaint (Concern really)
I used to access notifications by clicking on the W logo on the top LEFT hand page of my blog (Down Under in 2014) then about a week ago it’s (notifications) location shifted to the drop down menu of the reader menu and the W logo on my blog changed into a stylized globe (I have a jpeg screenshot of this, taken with the snipping tool but don’t know how to include it with this post)

Things are always changing here. :) We are constantly thinking about how to stay relevant and move the web forward. It’s how WordPress.com works and stays so good over time. As customers, sometimes :) it’s hard to be in the middle of a transition because things can go wrong (bugs) or feel uncomfortable (change), but please know that we have the group’s best interests at heart at the same time as we’re working to make better tools and improve speed and make everything work really well at scale.

    Now:

Why isn’t it listed under Reader on our Admin bar like it used to be listed?

Hold on to your hat, because there are more changes to come! My job is to help you guys with support, so I don’t always have the exact answers to the whys, but I can tell you what I think. For the admin bar, I think the idea right now is to simplify, make it faster, and make it more consistent across WordPress.com (for example, in the new admin tools being developed compared to the old wp-admin dashboard). When things like that get updated, they can go through a bit of an awkward stage at first :) but we have a really awesome support team (really really awesome) here to help you, so your reports and feedback are getting seen and we’ll be here to work through all the changes with you and dig out the biggest problems to try to get them fixed as fast as possible. I really appreciate our community. I love it when everyone is positive and works together. I think all of you guys are doing that in this thread, and the screenshots and feedback so far has been super helpful. :)

Now I don’t even have a button to click on anywhere (Especially on the right of the tool bar which gives me access to notifications).

Here’s where the button should be, this is how it looks for me on my blog: https://cloudup.com/cwI6WhfIi5Y

The icon will change depending on what the latest type of notification is—it could be a star or something else. It should light up orange when there are new notifications.

and the W logo on my blog changed into a stylized globe

Okay, this one I can explain. The globe icon is a placeholder for your blog icon. You can change the blog icon in Settings > General in your blog dashboard. Look for it on the right side of that page. Here is a related help page with more details and info:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/avatars/blavatars/

The url provided is an excellent work-a-round but It seems that WP has lost some of it’s functionality for me (as a neophyte in the Social Media World). I hope this provides you with a more complete concept of my concerns.

Thank you for the explanation. It sound like the main problem in your case is you cannot find the button itself because you wrote, “now I don’t even have a button to click on anywhere (Especially on the right of the tool bar which gives me access to notifications).” You should have that. Take a look at this screenshot I took of my gray toolbar to see if you have a button in the same place in your gray toolbar, keeping in mind the icon might not be a star and it might not be orange: https://cloudup.com/cwI6WhfIi5Y

Again I must apologize for not being in contact over the next few days!

Not a problem at all. The communication in a forum is asynchronous, so you should be able to come and go as needed. I really like that about forums.

Thanks for your feedback and questions, Ron. :)
