Where is the Notifications button?

@dandelionsalad, so the spinner is gone!? That’s awesome. I’m hoping it will stay fixed for you, but if it doesn’t, please reply back here and let me know.

Thanks designsimply for helping us out. Hope it stays fixed, too.

Got a photo into the Stylized Globe and the Orange Star has appeared (at last) but just a spinning clock image (Loading)
Still can’t add a screenshot here though. Thanks

Got a photo into the Stylized Globe

    Great!

the Orange Star has appeared (at last) but just a spinning clock image (Loading)

To clarify, it’s only supposed to be orange if there are new notifications. The rest of the time it should have a gray background.

Still can’t add a screenshot here though.

No worries. I think the spinning clock image (loading) might be stuck once in a while for just a few people (it’s not happening for everyone), so your best bet right now is to go straight to https://wordpress.com/notifications until the new toolbar changes happen and then we can look again at that point.

Thank you! I’m pretty happy with WordPress.com. There are so many good people here! :) :) :)

Just spinning again. Also other problems with the Admin bar: can’t get to Notifications, Reader, Stats, Blogs I Follow, Freshly Pressed. Just blank page.

Guess the people behind the scene are working on it.

I don’t know if this is related or of any help but I remember some similar ‘spinner’ problems back in 2013. You can find the discussion over at Modlook (private blog). Back then the timing delays to the Automattic servers uncovered a very particular edge case.

Thanks, iqatrophie, however, the post you suggested is on a private blog, so we can’t see it.

Another problem with the notifications button is that it stays orange (mine has a comment symbol) and I go to Comments and there are no new comments. I can’t turn it off by going to https://wordpress.com/notifications/ because that page is totally blank except the very top bar.

I know, but Sheri can. I just wanted to mention it to her in case this is the reason for the spinner problem.

The notifications button is still spinning, however, I am able to see the Notifications page, also Stats, Reader, etc. are now working properly. I had to add “https://wordpress.com” to accept cookies for session, though. I already had “wordpress.com” enabled, so not sure why the change recently.

I was just coming to look at that, but you’ve reported it fixed before I could even try testing. :)

The notifications button is still spinning

I am unable to reproduce this in testing, and only a small number of people seem to have reported this kind of problem in the forums—and it looks like they are also saying the problem comes and goes, which is strange!

Do you happen to have any browser add-ons installed that could be interfering?

As a test, are you able to try from a browser other than Firefox to see if the same problem happens in more than one browser for you?

Thanks Martin. I checked it out and that edge case seems to have been language settings related, but I don’t think the people in this thread are using language settings other than English. Thank you for the link though. You have a really good memory!

Thanks for checking in and trying to help, designsimply.

Just tried it using Chrome and the notifications button doesn’t work there either. I don’t have many Add-ons there as I don’t use that browser.

I haven’t added any new ones on Firefox since right before this happened, then it was fixed, and then it started not working again.

It seems to come and go whether it works or doesn’t work.

I can use the Notifications Page now (as well as the other WP pages). That seemed to be a cookie thing with https vs http.

It’s OK now. What I did differently was add “https://wordpress.com” to allow cookies (not just for session). So perhaps this is a cookie glitch for those of us who control our cookies a bit tighter than most others.
And the switch to WP pages to https may have caused this to happen.

Let’s see if it continues to work properly.

Thanks again for all your help.

This is such a good tip! Thank you so much for posting this as a follow-up!!

    I’m with ya.

The toolbar and notifications are about to get updated. So we’ll see what happens then. :)

Thanks so much for your continued help.

I posted what I did in case anyone else may benefit. It’s difficult to know if this was the problem or not as it was fixed before and I didn’t do anything, then it was a problem again.

There are multiple changes being made by WP, so it could be a combination. I find that making one change at a time is better to find out what problems may occur. But WP is changing the tool bar/Admin bar AND changing to https, so it’s hard to pinpoint what the technical difficulties are for us.
