Where is Twenty Ten Theme

  • Unknown's avatar

I’ve been using Twenty Ten for many years on six different blogs … several of which are linked. I’m trying to set up another relevant site and see that while Twenty Eleven is available, the Twenty Ten is not. I downloaded the Twenty Eleven and my graphic templates for the other sites don’t fit. What happened to the classic Twenty Ten?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

https://wordpress.com/theme/twentyten is now retired from WordPress.com. Themes are retired when they are no longer fully compatible with all the new features being rolled out at WordPress.com. You can however continue to use that theme with sites that were created before it was retired, but not with newly created WordPress.com sites. (Twenty Ten is still available for use with sites hosted elsewhere using the WordPress.org software).

Thanks SO much. You’ve saved me hours of sleuthing and trying to “tweak” things. I saw a recent post mentioning TwentyTen … but it was for WordPress.org and you’ve answered that question for me too. Only for use on sites hosted elsewhere. Thanks again for your speedy and excellent reply. 👍

  • Hi there,

I just wanted to add that Twenty-sixteen is very similar to Twenty-ten in terms of appearance, but unlike Twenty-ten it’s fully responsive for mobile devices and support our newer features, in case you want to look at it instead:

Thanks so much. I had a look at Twenty-sixteen and it is very attractive. My problem is sheer laziness. I have the templates for the graphics for the Twenty-ten and since some of the posts are shared by two of the blogs, I just got used to the simplicity of working with my existing templates.

But the Twenty-sixteen looks sleek and attractive with the side bars. Being fully responsive for mobile devices would be an asset too since I am addicted to the Ipad … my only escape from the overpowering ads on my laptop … LOL

    Thanks for your suggestion …

  • No problem. Write back to us if you have any trouble getting the theme set up.

re people who are still able to use Twenty Ten, what will happen when Gutenberg appears?

  • efpunter – Please elaborate on your question. I am unsure of the meaning.

lizkarkoski – it is said above that if you are already using the Twenty Ten theme then you can continue to use it. Fine .. that is the position today.

However, when Gutenberg appears in x months time will the position remain the same, i.e. will an existing user be able to continue to use Twenty Ten?

I ask because I have helped a number of people to set up WordPress sites and Twenty Ten is used by at least 3 of them.

Not so long ago when you used to say how popular a theme was, Twenty Ten seemed to be the most popular .. so presumably there are quite a lot of people who would be interested in the answer.

  • Are these sites with WordPress.com? Or do they use the WordPress.org installation?

I work with WordPress.com. I have six blogs using the Twenty Ten and almost half a million viewers. The sites are instructional and offer free downloads of original classical music for students. My goal is to provide as much free information and resources as possible … paying tribute to my heroes at GIMP and Khan Academy, Muse score and countless others. If my blogs become inoperative after Gutenberg appear in x months … then over ten years of work goes down the drain. Surely WordPress could not in good conscience destroy years of honest and sincere work. Surely. Say it’s not so.

lizkarkoski – they are all WordPress.com.

  • Gutenberg is not going to forcibly change the theme on any site. There are still sites on WordPress.com using a classic original themes. Even though we no longer support development of those retired themes, we do not force anyone to change it.

Thanks. I hope that Automattic is going to publish ahead of launch date a clear summary of what Gutenberg means to existing WordPress.com users, in particular ..

Is it going to be rolled out gradually, and if so what notice will individual users get?

Will users be able to continue to use the current editor (TinyMCE) rather than Gutenberg, if they so wish?

If there is a choice, will it be done on a site basis or on a per post/page basis?

  • efpunter – I don’t have answers to those questions. My best suggestion is to follow en.blog.wordpress.com for updates/details.
